Extremism

When something is surplus or superabundant than its usual limit it converts to the opposite. From this definition, the term extremism pops up to the surface. It's something much more than the usual. It's usually a situation of great danger or disaster, and here, I am referring to beliefs. Extremism in beliefs is the most dangerous one. It is far than the usual reason and further than is thought to be reasonable. Opinions can be expressed without going to extremes.

I have been living here in Saudi Arabia with many different people. They come from different parts of the world to work here in this biggest exporting country for oil. They have different nationalities, religions, beliefs, cultures. We eat together and work together. We argue, debate, and discuss our various perspectives concerning any subject in a modern manner. Our voices sometimes raised during those discussions but the matter did not need to use our hands or use any kind of violence.

Ten or twenty years ago, this phenomenon was not like now. The holding of views that are so far from being moderate as possible leads to undesired feelings. Extremism in beliefs as I mentioned before, is the most dangerous one. To make a point, some of them use their hands, their guns or even heavy weapons. Most of our problems nowadays come from extremism.

If we talk about political extremism, our talk will expand. We have endured extremities of suffering from them. Two-thirds of the causes of conflicts or wars are because of extremism. I cannot say it's a phenomenon. It's a real disease. We need efforts to get rid of it. Efforts of individuals, organizations, companies, governments, countries and even the help of the united nations. Cooperation, understanding, giving the area for the other to express his or her idea. Or maybe the matter is more than that! People who are specialists and experts in this field can help and give their guidance or help and till then, the phenomenon of extremism will still be there.

The bells are ringing

This is the first time I try  to make a poem.  I hope I am not too far away.

The bells are ringing

calling closed doors  to  open

the child does not want milk

tears  won't dry

The bells are ringing

Many of them are afraid

Nights are long

The  cry of that child is so loud

They want survival, who cares?

The bells are ringing

hungry birds fly helplessly

in the cloudy sky

The space is not enough

Weak wings stop to flutter

The bells are ringing

Tears are still dropping

But their shouts still linger

In that cloudy sky

The widows sing silently and

The bells are ringing

The present progressive tense tells us about an action that started in the past and continues to the present.  It refers to an unspecified time between 'before now' and 'now'. The present perfect progressive or the present perfect continuous is the form of the verb that refers to the action that started in the past and continued up until now.

We think the action started in the past and maybe it did not finish at that period of time. So, we are more concerned about the process and the consequence as well. This progress may have finished or it is still going on. When we say perfect we do not mean absolute perfectness but we mean it is finished and done. You can see this example here:

I have been waiting for her all day.

This means I have been waiting for her to come and I am still waiting. It Could be a serious matter or I need to see her for an important cause.

The present perfect progressive shows that something is happening lately or recently. For instance:

The Spanish team has been playing very well.

It means that lately, the team is doing well. I am referring to Barcelona. I like Messy and Nemar. One of the functions of the present perfect progressive tense is the finishing of the action, but we are interested in the result. Such as:

Sarah has been cooking kuskus.

It means she has been doing the cooking since a certain time in the past before now and the kuskus is in front of us on the table which is very hot and delicious. Some verbs have no continuous forms like (want, hear, love, know… etc. ) we can use the simple perfect present tense instead. Examples:

I have wanted to see her.

She has heard everything.

I have hated him since the first day I saw him.

Power or Money

The lady took her niece's hand and ushered her to sit next to her. She was in her late fifties. Her hair was gray and there were some wrinkles under her eyelids,  despite all that, she looked firm and commanding. She was rich, famous and powerful. Her husband died ten years ago leaving her no kids but a great fortune. She has been managing this for a long time. The companies that deal with the petrol were more than five major ones. Two in America, one was in Britain. For the  other two companies, one was in the gulf area and another one was  in Venezuela. There were also the branches for those companies scattered  all over the world. she wanted to train her niece to take care of this huge responsibility.

Her niece was seventeen and she wanted her to understand how to manage such huge companies after her death. She was telling her about power. The girl was thinking that money was the power. Her aunt told her that money was only a mean to get you somewhere. Power is the target.  If you own the power, money can come easily. The aunt was hoping for the head of the parliament. She was elected as a member six years ago, and she was trying to get to that post since then. That is why she wanted her niece to think about power. But her niece is absolutely different from her. She thinks money is power. You can buy voters to elect you and vote for you. Or you can pay to get whatever you desire, as long as you have the ability to pay for it.

The girl came and sat beside her aunt. It is useless to discuss the matter with her. Each party is convinced with his own ideas. The aunt started to tell her niece to think about power seriously. There is something which cannot enter the little head of that girl. She thought to herself, we have more than fourteen companies all over the world. Our monthly net profit is nearly more than one seventy million dollars a month. My aunt is driving me crazy. What does she need? What is there to be put into consideration?

Cyber assault

Two days ago, I heard about the news of three or four big famous companies that were raided by hackers. I was floored by the news. I took the news from a narrow-angle. My money in the bank. What will happen if they attack the bank?  The supply of data stealing products and services  is growing. Is the internet not safe anymore? I have heard about  some banks in the US or the UK. They were many fraud attempts or criminal acts on them. They blocked many attempts of hackers attack. I do not have much money in the bank but it gives a lot of pain. The right is hard. Even if you have one dollar in your account. I do not have any idea how these cybercriminals get access to those accounts. The hackers are very adept at revising their styles or methods to evade any detection.

My brother, engineer Khalid is a computer programmer. He always tells me about their methods and  it is not easy to capture them. According to my brother, those intruders have ways to get to your system. When I asked him what would happen to my money if any cyber attempt occurred. He smiled. He hasn't had much to smile about lately. The corners of his mouth turned up to show amusement, then he continued, "most of those people are very smart and genius. The matter is not about your money or my money. It's about countries and governments. Hackers tried to sneak onto the system of the ministries of defense or foreign affairs.  Of course, governments cannot do this alone. I mean to defend themselves from those attackers."

To tell you the truth, I was worried from the growing of the malicious and wicked attempts of those criminals.

An apology

I have had some difficulties connecting to the internet.  When I tried to open My English Club page, I had many difficulties and I consumed a lot of time sitting and gazing for several minutes to browse from one page to the other. It was very inconvenient for me and for my friends, too. This caused some delay in answering some messages or reviewing some work sent by my friends. Even, if we were chatting, the messages did not get there quickly. I mean, from me to the person whom I talked to or vice versa. Some of them nagged and grumbled. Others complained. Some questions needed quick answers. I could not do that. I wonder whether this problem is here alone or is it all over the world. One of my friends told me that it was indeed a global issue. I just wrote these words to the readers to apologize for the inconvenience. I have been experiencing this for a long time. In certain times, the world wide web is ok, in others, it is like the tortoise.

Ashura

Ashura means the tenth of Muharram; the Arabic month that comes after the month of Hajj in the Arabic lunar calendar. Today is 10/10/2016 which corresponds to 09/1/1438. What is the story behind this day? When prophet Mohammad (peace and  blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Medina he found the Jewish fasting on this day. He told them what was that day and they explained that they did this to thank God because the Israelites were freed from Pharaoh, the king of Egypt at that time, on that day. The prophet told them that he and his followers had the right to fast on that day, more than the Jewish. He ordered the Muslims to fast on Ashura, but they must fast one day ahead of it or one day before.

In hadeeth, the fasting of Ashura atones the sins of the previous year. It also commemorates with the martyrdom of Al Hassan bin Ali, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Some Muslims consider it a sad day. We are fasting now to gain the favor of Allah and wipe the sins of the previous year. I should have published it yesterday to remind my fellow Muslims about it. But they can fast tomorrow and the day after.

paradoxes

The people were trying to get their tickets at the train station. Some were standing in queues and others were keeping an eye on the suitcases and the rest of the luggage. Tom boarded the train without any tickets, and he sat near an old lady. The lady looked at him approvingly and admiringly. She thought of changing her seat and moving nearer to him, but her foot was entangled in the strap of her suitcase. Then, she was absent for a while and came back to sit next to him. He did not pay any attention to what she was doing or what she had done.

Tom came from a very rich family. His father is an owner of many factories, restaurants, coffee shops, newspapers.  His mother is an executive officer of a big company, and she has the biggest supermarket in her area. His pictures are everywhere. His main problem is boredom and idleness.  He did not persevere in his studies to graduate, that was because of the private tutors and online learning. After graduation, his father told him to take the management of his factories but he refused. His mother told him to take care of her supermarket, again he refused. Why should he work? Everything is right there in front of him. Money, women, cars, houses, whatever he wishes or desires, it is in front of his eyes. His life became boring and he decided to make it more interesting by going to jail. He thought of going to restaurants or cafes. By eating or drinking without paying money, he can be taken to jail. Once, he went to a cafe and had tea with milk. He did not pay for it. He was waiting for the waiter to come and quarrel with him and sue him to the police. The waiter came to him with a broad smile and said, "Do you need anything else, Mr. Tom? Your father had raised our salaries."

Tom was disappointed; he knew that this place is one of his father's cafes. He went to another town and ate in a restaurant by ordering items of high quality. The bill was over five hundred dollars. When he washed his hands and tried to go without paying the bill, one of the waiters stopped him. He told him to pay or he would be taken to the police station. It was his dream. Once he was taken to the police station, the officer in charge told him happily, "what a pleasure to see you here, Tom" He paid the bill and said, "You see those computers over there? They were donated by your father."

At last, he decided to leave his hometown and go to another city without paying any money. Sitting near the old lady, he thought that was the best way to go to jail. The conductor was approaching him, suddenly he said to Tom, "Your aunt has paid for your ticket, happy trip."

susceptibility

It's just a thought that I never want to hurt anyone, either by my hand or by my tongue. Honestly, I do not want to be excessively proud of myself or being conceited. That is not my track, to cause any harm or pain to anyone. Naturally, no one knows what evil lurks in the hearts of others. It's strange that some people find enjoyment in torturing others. Making different means, or use their scheme of things to hurt others. The more others are hurt, that will be their great expectations and achievements. Inflicting physical or emotional pain is their biggest relief. Damaging the character of someone is their goal. Some people criticize my writing quite severely and that really hurts me, but patience is my great weapon. I never quarrel or express any dissatisfaction or grumble, instead, I let my work do the response.A famous writer is criticized severely and of course, that causes a great pain for him or her. Why that someone "X" of men or women is successful? The hatred or envy churn inside them. Some people are easily affected or rather they are easily influenced by certain or specific movements from those who envy or hate them. It's better to clean our hearts from diseases, hypothetical corruption or sinister connection of any kind. Our spirits and souls should be pure and free of any impedances that hinder our development and progress.

Supplication of distress

This  duaa is by Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him), whenever you are in distress or difficulty, and you call on God sincerely and repentantly, your call will be answered. The story of prophet Yunus was taken from Qurran. He was sent with the message of God to the village of Nineveh, present of mowsil in Iraq.  The  prophet called on his people to the message of Allah and to follow the truth and the right path. His people rejected the message and persisted on their delusion and wrongdoings. He was disheartened and frustrated. Prophet Yunus, disappointed and angry,  went out of the village. He threatened them with the punishment of Allah after three days. After some time, his people realized their error and they went out to the desert asking Allah to forgive them and stop the punishment. Allah accepted their supplication and duaa and He spared them the punishment. Prophet Yunus was in a hurry. He was not patient and he did not wait for Allah's instructions.

He went to board a ship. In the middle of the sea a storm broke out and the waves started to pound the sides of the ship. The people were told to throw their luggage but still, the ship was not steady and heavy and it might drown any moment. Then it was said that one of the passengers should jump into the water to lighten the load of the ship. They made a draw. The first draw threw on Prophet Yunus. Then, the people knew Prophet Yunus was a good man and he was sent to his people. They decided to make another draw, but it came against him. Then, they made the third draw and Prophet Yunus lost it, too. He knew that it had been intended that he would be the one. They did not want him to be thrown out of the ship but he took off his clothes and jumped into the sea. God sent a big fish from the green sea (the Atlantic ocean) to swallow him. The Almighty inspired that the whale not to devour him or break any bones of his body. At this moment, Prophet Yunus knew his mistake. He was inside three parts of the darkness, first, the darkness of the belly of that fish. Second, the darkness of the sea, and third, the  darkness of the night. The prophet then knew his wrongdoing of being impatient with his people and not waiting for God's instructions. The fish cleaved the sea until it reached the bottom. There, he heard the rocks uttering the glorifications of Allah. At that moment, Prophet Yunus  called to his God, (there is no God but you, glorified be you, I have been of the wrongdoers). Allah answered his call and saved him from the belly of that fish and from the darkness and the fish spewed him on the shore. It is obvious that if we are in agony or distress, we can use that

Eid Mabruk

Today is Eidul Aladha. It's a great day for the Muslim people, its fasting atones one year in advance and the previous year. It's a big feast full of its sacrifices. The hajji  slaughter his animal as a sacrifice for Allah. it's indeed a great closeness to God. Its closeness can be seen from the joy on the faces of both the pilgrims and the people who are staying at home. Eidul Adha is a great opportunity for those who have some enmity or hate to one another to come and make reconciliation. It's the chance for them to make peace and its occasion is full of happiness, love and forgiveness. It's the exchange of greetings and hugging. Its wishes are shared by family members, friends, love ones. It's a day of forgiveness after its prayer is over. It's called the feast of sacrifice or nahr. Day Three

As we mentioned before, before the sunset of the second day of hajj, Allah, The Almighty would forgive everyone on plain Arafat. It's a great day for Muslims. Satan is never seen smaller than on this day. We are fasting today. According to hadith, fasting of Arafa day atones one year before and the next year. I hope Allah will accept our fasting. Before sunset, pilgrims must leave plain Arafah back to Minna. They must pass plain Muzdalifa and spend the night there. On their faithful journey, they continue their chanting. Once they reach rite Muzdalifa, they combine Magrib and Ishaa prayers together. As usual, Ishaa prayer is shortened to two rakaa. They pray dawn prayer at (Almashaar alhram), a ritual mosque in Muzdalifa, and in the morning, they continue their journey to ritual Mina.

Now we are on the third day of hajj, the 10th of Thulhijjah. It is called the day of Nahr or sacrifice. Many animals are slaughtered on this day. Even for us here at home, we do our sacrifices following the sunnah and commemorating our Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail. The pilgrim does plenty of rituals here in Mina. Sacrificing is an obligation for (mutamatee and garin), please see my blog, hajj 2014, about (tamtuu and giran). But for the mufrid pilgrim, sacrificing is not an obligation.  He can cut his hair or shorten it. Tawaf Ifada can be done after throwing gamratul agaba at the first pillar which is thrown by seven pebbles on the tenth day of Thulhijjah. The next day, he throws seven pebbles at each of the three pillars for two days that makes forty two pebbles. Adding to them the first seven pebbles, the total will be forty nine.

Then  going to Mecca for Tawaf and Sayiee. Our prophet was asked whether to throw the stones first or to sacrifice, he answered, ((do anything and there is no embarrassment or harm)). The pilgrim will stay two days if he is hasty. If he is not, he stays three days in Mina. That makes five days of hajj. Then he goes back home. For more details about hajj and its rituals, you can go back to my blog about hajj in 2014.

Day two (Arafah)

We are on the second day of hajj. It's Thulhijjah 9th 1437 H. as we mentioned before, after sleeping in Minna, and after dawn prayer, the pilgrims will move to plain Arafah. This is the main corner of hajj. According to Prophet Mohammed, (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ((Al-hajj Arafah)). This simple phrase implies a great concept of the meaning of hajj.  It means that the whole hajj and its legality are confined in the effective day of Arafah. It means that hajj becomes valid only when the day of Arafah is witnessed and observed by the pilgrims who intended hajj, regardless of being in Mecca for a long period of time. To summarize this hadith, the pilgrim must be on plain Arafah before transience or the disappearance of the sun, taking care of being within the limits or the boarders of Arafah. On their way from Minna to Arafah, they must keep their chanting (labaik alahuma labaik, labaika la shareeka laka laibai, ina alhamdah wa nimata lak, la shareeka laka labaik) the chanting means, Oh God, here I am, answering you, and you have no partner, the blessing is your and the sovereignty, Praise and grace is for you, you have no partner. I am here for you and at your command.

He must wait until the call for prayer. Then, he prays duhur and assar prayers combined and shortened to two rakaa for each prayer in Namirah mosque. And continues his chanting and supplication to Allah, The Almighty. Why the name of Arafah for that place? They were many novels and hadiths about it, but there were no solid textual evidence that can be traced to the prophet, (peace and blessings of Allah be upon Him). But some (ulamaa) scientists or scholars who had recorded stories from the past like, Arafah comes from the Arabic verb 'yaarif', Arafa is the past tense of it. Arafah is the place where Prophet Adam met our mother Eve. Another story, angel Jibreel took Prophet Abraham and introduced him to the different rites of hajj and each time he was telling him, "Did you know?" Arafah is the place where pilgrims meet and know one another for the first time.

But despite everything, no (alim) scholar would debate or argue about the significance and the importance of Arafah for pilgrimage and pilgrims.  There is no day better in the sight of Allah than the day of Arafah. Allah will descend on that day to the nearest heaven in a way that suits his Almighty, and He is proud of his slaves on earth and He says to his angels in heaven, ((look at my servants, they have come from far away and near, despite that they have not seen my punishment. What do they want? Mercy, oh my angels you witness that I have forgiven them)). Before sunset, many people will be freed from the hellfire on the day of Arafah than any other day.

Day one (Tarwiyah)

Today is 10-09- 2016 which corresponds to the 08-12- 1437 H. The eighth day of Thulhijjah.  It is the first day of hajj. Pilgrims are arriving in Mecca to make arrival Tawaf to surround kaaba seven times, and then, they go to Minna. This is called the day of (tarwiyah) or the day of irrigation. Tarwiya in Arabic comes from the verb (yarwi) irrigates. It was given that name because the water, during those days was very rare or rather nonexistent at all. Pilgrims come to Mecca and then they irrigate themselves and their animals whether camels, horses or donkeys and take some to the plain of Minna to supply themselves for the rest of their hajj. Minna  is about two to three kilometers from Mecca.

It was also said that the name of tarwiyah came from the vision which God showed it to His Prophet Abraham. He showed him the rites of hajj. People will stay the night here in Minna and move at dawn or after dawn prayer to plain Arafa on the ninth of Thulhijjah. Tomorrow is the greatest day of hajj.

Hajj (2)

The journey of the pilgrim starts from Mecca. Thulhijjah 8th , the day of irrigation, the pilgrim comes to Mecca and stays the night. At the dawn of Thulhijjah 9th, he moves to mount Arafa. Making supplication and duaa, combining the prayers of duhur and assar in advance and continuing to ask The Almighty what he wishes or wants. Before sunset, he must move from mount Arafa to Muzdalifa, another rite area where he combines Ishaa and Magrib prayers together and continues his supplication. Then he collects stones to be thrown at Satan later.

Thulhijjah 10th  at dawn, he continues  his journey to Mena where he performs the rest of the rites. This is the day of Eid Aladha, or the big feast. The pilgrim can slaughter his sacrifice and cut or shorten his hair. He can also go to  throw the stones at Satan. After this, he can take off his Ihram, but he is not allowed to touch his wife (have sexual intercourse)  or go hunting. After Ifadah Tawaf, the hajji can lie with his woman and go hunting if he wishes. On the third day at Mena, the pilgrim can make the goodbye Tawaf and go home. Hasty pilgrims can stay two days in Mena and perform the goodbye Tawaf and go back home.  Hajj is over. The pilgrim returns from his hajj clean with no sins at all.

Hajj (1)

Hajj, idiomatically or linguistically means intention. Religiously, hajj means intending to visit something greatened, honorable or glorified. The terminology in Islam implies going to Mecca in Saudi Arabia to visit (kaaba) the grand mosque. Hajj or pilgrimage is done annually to Mecca. Pilgrims perform hajj to retrace the steps of the prophets and recount their dedication to God. In Quraan, Allah said, ((And announce on people pilgrimage, they will come to you on foot and on every skinny camel, they will come from every deep and distant highway to perform Hajj)), Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. According to Hadeeth narrated by caliph Omar ibn Alkhatab, may Allah be pleased with him,Prophet Mohammed (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, (Islam was built on five, to testify that there is no God but Allah and Mohammed is his messenger. Do your prayers. Pay Zakah (chastity). Fasting in Ramadan and perform Hajj if You could do it).

At this time of the year, people come from different parts of the world to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia to perform this duty. It's an obligation once in a lifetime if they could do it. They wear Ihram once their plane comes over migat. The (ulamaa) scientists advise that it is better to be worn before coming near Migat. The captain of the plane or his cabin attendants usually announce the nearing of Migat, but it is better to wear ihram before that or if the trip takes one or two hours, you can wear Ihram at the beginning of it.

Ihram, migat, what is Ihram and what is migat? Ihram is wearing white clothes. They are usually two garments and without any stitching worn by males. For females, they wear their own clothes. Ihram is the first rite of Hajj.

Migat is the place which was specified by Prophet Mohammed to perform Ihram. Detailing this will be included in part two of hajj.

Homophones

The idea of the blog came from the correction of my mistake by Mr. Bijan to the word 'week' instead of 'weak'. The word homophone means one word that has the same pronunciation of another word or two, but they have a different meaning or spelling, such as the two words mentioned above, or (sun/ son), (too/ two), (sea/ see). Sun is the star which the earth orbits or revolves around it. While son means a boy or a man related or associated to both his parents. Too means so, likewise or to the higher degree. Two means this number "2" or more than one.  I made a terrible mistake when I was writing my last blog, love. I wrote this sentence (I was week). The word week refers to a period of seven or five days. Of course,. I meant (I was weak).  Weak here, as an adjective means lacking the power or the ability to perform physically. This is all because of love. Honestly, I was trembling when I wrote that sentence. My concentration was poor remembering those painful moments of my life. Nevertheless, that was not an excuse for me to make such a terrible mistake like that.  So please, watch out for homophones.

Love

Love, what is the secret that lies behind that word? I always try to avoid talking or even mentioning it. Of course, the subject needs more than a blog to write about. Naturally, we have to include the general concept of the word.  It is a feeling of liking someone or something very much.  They say that love is a feeling of deep regard, devotion, and fondness. A strong feeling of affection, attraction, and eagerness, you name it, a strong desire to be with someone, and share feelings. I tried it two or three times quite a few years back, and I was hit in the tank, as they say.  The experience was very hard for me. The question, why was it so important or necessary for us? Can we live without it? Here, I am speaking generally about love. The love of money, my mother and my work, etc.

The answer is very simple.  We need it badly. Most crimes in the world happened because of it. Many sacrifices were done because of it. No need to mention the man who killed another man because he took his love from him, or the young man who committed suicide because his girl married another one. The list is very long. Again, the question, why is it so necessary for us? Of course, we cannot use hate as a substitute, can we?

Some people say that the love of the country is from the love of the woman. I wonder if that supposition is true or no! We have heard about one of the kings of France who gave up the throne for the woman he loved. The first time I fell in love, I tried to resist it. I used to swim against the stream but it was indeed very painful and difficult. The current was very strong. I was weak. The second time, I convinced myself that I had to surrender.  I need you guys to write about love. Someone will definitely come out with the big article. It's a challenge, let's do it.

Once upon a time, there was an unjust Arab king. He had a hunchback. He did not want anyone to call him a hunchbacked man, if anyone dared,  he would be headed. His people did not dare to call him so. One man said that he would call him a hunchback man. The people told him to be wise and not to do so. The king would kill him. He told them to watch and listen to him. The next day, he went up to the king. He greeted the king and said, "you are our king. We will always honor you and respect you. If you die,  the people of the north 'yabcooka' and the people of the south 'yabcooka'. The people of the east 'yabcooka' and the people of the west 'yabcooka'." The people were astonished and they imagined that the king would chop his head off. Instead, the king  was happy and ordered the man to  be given a big reward. What was the secret about that?

Now, let's go back to the definition of the Arabic word, yabcooka. It comes from the original verb, 'yabki' (cry). Yabcooka, if it is interpreted to English, it becomes a complete sentence, containing the subject, the verb and the object. It  means; cry for you. As the matter of fact, there was a diphthong here. But when you divide that verb into these words, it becomes yab- cooka which means the hunchbacked. now let's define each word. Yab = short for 'ya' ' abo' which means a nickname or rather the father of someone. The words 'ya' and 'abo' were joined in the first three words of the verb 'yabcooka' to make one syllable to form one speech sound. It's kind of intriguing . In fact, the man was calling the king the hunchback man each time he was addressing him. The king was proud, he thought that at the time of his death many people would cry for him.
