A Book I Have to Have

I want to share a great English learning resource with all of MyEC.

A few weeks ago I found out about a wonderful book.  Some of you may already have one of these or have the earlier edition.  I really regret that I did not discover this great little book long ago.I had seen this book advertized, but I had assumed that it was similar to another I had looked at (for little children).  This book is best when bought in the Bilingual version of your 1st language combined with English.  The second edition looks like the illustration, except it should say English/Arabic or English/ (the language that you speak).   The book has excellent pictures which show objects and actions which are described in English.  There is also a translation for a second language.  It is so easy to understand that everyone who sees it wants to know how to get one.

I reviewed this briefly in our Book Lovers Group and am putting it in my blog also.  I think you may not be able to part with this book if you look at one with your own language combined with the English.  There are 13 language versions of the book published in the second edition (Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Farsi, French, Haitian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Urdu, and Vietnamese).

Anyway, do please look at the book and see what you think.  I would value your feedback on this.  If you see one and don't agree, please tell me.  The Arabic speakers really loved their edition and our local bookstore was quickly emptied. I have also used this book in Japan.

It may be best to save up a little money before you visit your bookstore.  This doesn't cost much more than a few meals of "junk food".  If you speak Cambodian or Polish, you will have to get the original edition of the book for now.  Don't feel badly because the first edition is very good too.

There are also different level workbooks, teacher resources, and an Interactive CD ROM version. There is a kids version which is good for the little ones.

The 4 CD's pronounce every word in the book. This is very helpful because you can learn the exact pronunciation by listening to professionals speaking.

My New Country and my Night Job

Some of you know that I am now living in Saudi Arabia.  If you read my earlier post, you know about my "Day Job" during the school year.  Now that school is finishing up for the summer I have time to comment on my "Night Job".  I still must work four hours each morning, but it is much easier than during the school year.

Every Saturday through Wednesday night, I am teaching English to adults in a Private English Language Institute.  People pay to take English classes here after they have finished work.  I teach a number of the police through a contract with the Ministry of Interior.  I also teach engineers and college students, as well as some younger people not yet employed.

This Blog Post uses some words that you may not know yet.  It is mostly at the intermediate to upper intermediate language level, other than the new advanced level words.  If you use your English dictionary, you should be able to understand my story.

Teaching adults is usually much easier than children for several reasons:

1st.   Many are very motivated to learn English.  When people want to learn it is much easier to teach.

2nd.  This is not something required of them, they or their employers are paying for the classes.  People usually hate to waste money and are more likely to attend.

3rd.   Most of these learners already have a better English language background than the average schoolchild.

I really enjoy teaching my adult classes.  Most of the students are very good and improve very quickly. There are some thorns along with the roses, so I will point out some minor difficulties so you don't think it is perfect all the time.

Teaching adults also has some drawbacks (difficulties) here in Saudi Arabia.  Some of the drawbacks are cultural and others are individual in nature:

1st.   A minimum of two hours per day, five days per week is recommended to teach the "Direct English" program properly.  Here we have a cultural bias against attending classes on Wednesday night, which is the night before their weekend.  Many feel the same as people do on Friday night where the weekend begins on Saturday.  These students only receive 4 days of instruction instead of 5 days (a loss of 20% of the class time) even if they are on time for all their other classes.

2nd.   Three of the five daily prayer times overlap with the evening teaching schedule.  Therefore, even if a student arrives promptly, he can miss as much as 10-15 minutes for prayer during a one-hour class.  We do our best to work around this in scheduling classes but the prayer times change along with the day length.

3rd.    Some adults are only concerned with getting a certificate, which can help their pay rate.  In these cases, they may be very lazy about attending class and only come enough to get a passing mark instead of trying to learn more English.  This is more often the case when an employer is paying for the class.

Cultural difficulties are something that only need to be worked around.  Every culture is different and I would never expect someone to miss an important part of their religious life.  The preference for beginning the weekend early is something that I understand, but am unable to control with some of the students.

The goal of getting an English completion certificate is not bad.  I do disagree with the plan of some students who come late to classes or miss classes entirely because they don't actually care about learning English, but rather just want to pass an exam and get a certificate.  Laziness is found in every culture and we can also find cheaters everywhere.  Please understand that these students are just a few and most students try very hard.

My favorite job is unpaid and I do it just because I love to do it, when I get time on the internet.  That "job" is interacting with all of you English Club members.  I can't imagine many of the members of My English Club deliberately missing an English class, even if someone else had paid for it.  That is why I love my friends here so much.  You all really care about learning English, just like the best of my adult students.  I hope that some day you all get the chance to have some classes like those that I teach here.  The students who come to class and study move very quickly toward better conversational English.

Falling Down Hurts: But it Helps Us

I just got a message from a friend who had written weeks ago. He wanted to know how he could speak out loud without being shy and afraid. He worries that people will correct or criticize his speaking. Those who will correct us are our best friends.

Shyness is natural and criticism is important.  If others cannot criticize and correct us we cannot learn. I am now learning Arabic and face the same feelings as you.  I don't like to make mistakes, but it is how I learn the correct way of saying things.

We must just do the way little children do and speak without fear of correction,  because correction is the quickest way for us to learn.  You have seen children learning to walk.  They try to stand and take a step, but they fall back down.  If they had the same fear that we do as older people, they would never walk.

We must be like the child who keeps getting up and trying over and over, even though we will fall again.

You may think, What if they laugh at me?

Does laughter hurt?  Laugh at yourself right now.  I am laughing at myself. I am only a beginner in Arabic.

Are children hurt when they fall? Maybe they are hurt a little, but falling teaches them to walk.

Will you learn to speak English well?  You can speak English very well someday, but you must have many falls along the way.

Your other choice is to spend the rest of your life crawling.

It is your choice to make.

Will you walk or will you crawl?  I will walk someday, even if it is painful.

MY NEW COUNTRY (And My Day Job)

I am finally settling in to my new home and new job in Saudi Arabia.  I am teaching English as a Foreign Language, in a private secondary school for boys during the mornings.  I also go next door to the intermediate school and visit each English class there for one period each week.  I still do not have a reliable internet connection, so I am not able to do much here at my favorite English web site.

THESE ARE EXAMPLES OF SOME NATIVE WILDLIFE WE SAW ALONG THE HIGHWAY

Please see my Photo Album Titled KSA for many more photos from this amazing country.

I thank all of my friends for your concerns, comments and questions.  Things are going well, but the teaching takes up much of my time when I am near an internet connection. The rest of my time I am at home without any internet at all. I am promised by the phone company, that I should have the internet installed at my home very soon.

The students here very smart for the most part.  Some are too lazy to practice their English, so I am encouraging the better ones to join MyEc and begin practicing along with all of you.  I think our English Club here will be the best thing they can do outside of class besides studying. Do you agree that this is the best place for them to learn on-line?

Would you like to see some of the good students come here and participate in MyEc?  They will be able to tell you some things about their part of Saudi Arabia, and they should be able to learn some things from you, besides getting some good English practice.  Later on, I will write a blog post about my "Night Job".

LEAVING MY COUNTRY

I am leaving my country to move overseas. I will miss all of my friends here while I am away from the internet. My wife and I have an entire house to empty so we can let others live here while we are gone. I am spending many hours every day getting ready. There is so much to do when leaving your country. Many things have to be sold and others put in storage, or given away for someone who can use them. We will recycle all the unusable items, of course.Other than that, I have very busy times ahead, such as deciding what I can bring with me in the limited space of an airplane.A few books, clothes, and of course my laptop? My wife will follow in a few weeks with her items. What would you take if you had move away and were going to be gone for a few years?Keep in mind you can have one small carry-on bag and a larger bag or trunk in the luggage compartment of the plane.Seriously, what would you bring and what would you leave?Maybe you can help me with your suggestions. Weight and space are both a problem. As an English teacher, I must bring some of my books. What else should I try to squeeze into a trunk?I will not be able to answer your comments, but I will try to get to see your suggestions.I will tell you where I am after all of my visa and other papers are approved. Maybe English teachers are too undesirable :) for immigrants, so I will be quiet about the final destination until we both have arrived. :)))Thank you for any suggestions!

OVER 1 MILLION FREE BOOKS FOR YOU

I have a wonderful resource for you if you want to read books.

Before we go on, I need to make clear the ethics of downloading books, so please do try to understand the difference between copyrighted and public domain books. (There is a test question about this.)

COPYRIGHT: A copyright is the legal ownership of exclusive rights, which is given to the author or creator of an original work. It is only given if the author or artist goes through certain steps toward filing for legal copyright protection of their work. The copyright is a way to protect writers like our own Tara Benwell. It is very bad to download or copy material that is copyrighted.

PUBLIC DOMAIN: Written works or art that belong to everyone. When a book is in the public domain, it is not protected by a copyright. These are free for anyone to copy and nobody is harmed.

Let's see if you understand the difference.

Q: When is it not wrong to download a copy of a book?

A: Public domain books are the only books that are legal to download and harm no one by copying.

I am giving you a link to many thousands of books you can download and read if you want them because they are in the public domain. Remember, public domain means these are free to be copied because the writer and publisher have already had their chance to be paid for their work. The copyright for the books has expired and they now are available for anyone to copy and read.

To start out, this may be easier to use while you are getting used to the huge number of books. I suggest this LINK TO the 100 MOST POPULAR free E-books at the Gutenberg Project.
http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/scores/top Many of these are considered to be classics and the type that high school students or college students may be required to read. This selection may be easier for you to work with. They have many thousands more books besides these.

The collection below also includes the Gutenberg Project books. It is a combination of several large collections from around the world. Last night I read from some books originally written over 400 years ago. It is amazing what they have, but also can be confusing with so much to choose from.

LINK TO University of Pennsylvania Online Books Library (over 800,000) Public Domain Books - http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/

Please Remember:
Anything really new will not be free to take because of copyright protection. Please do not steal form the writers by taking copyrighted material. You can feel good about reading the classics here without hurting the writers, by taking books they should be paid for :) If you like this please tell your friends who are also trying to learn English. :))

AUDIO BOOKS FOR FREE:
Thanks to my friend Hong Thanh Nhan, for giving this link we can also download some legal, public domain audio books right here - http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/
It is so good to be honest and use the public domain materials, and please thank Hong Thanh Nhan for pointing out this very good link.

I got some very happy news by email this afternoon from a lady named Julie. Julie always sends me an email when a missing child is recovered. Today has been a sick day for me but I brought my work home so I can still be productive and I saw Julie's email with the good news. A child form Connecticut, in the USA had been missing since October 10, 2009 and was recovered. Try to imagine the happiness of that family.Did you know that all over the world children go missing from their families? I am pretty sure it happens in your country too. It is harder to imagine anything much sadder, than to have your child taken and not know his or her whereabouts. There have been many efforts to help locate such children, from putting a photo on a milk carton, to showing them on television. One very large company called EMCOR has tried a different approach and it is actually working. This program is called Taking KidSafety to the Street and involves placing removable signs on every one of the thousands of vehicles owned by the company. The sign has a photo of the child, and if known the abductor. There are names for the people and there is a large phone number to report the missing child or abductor if you see them. Each month a new set of signs is sent to me by Julie, and I give them out at my portion of EMCOR. Last July the company answered our requests to have signs for personal vehicles too. Each month we receive special signs to go on the back glass of our own vehicles if we want one. These signs can be easily read form the outside of the car buy the driver can see right through them for safety reasons. This is the logo that they use for the campaign to remind everyone about the importance of safety for children. EMCOR is a company spanning a good part of the English speaking world. Canada, England, and the USA are probably the most prominent locations for the company. The thousands of vehicles in EMCOR’s fleet are all over most parts of these countries at construction sites, as well as public and private buildings. Hundreds of people may see the sign on one of our vehicles each day. With the help of EMCOR as well as other public and private groups 198 of these children have been recovered as of today. For the sake of their privacy I am not printing their names or photos.QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT:Why might children be missing?Child soldiersHeld for ransom money from family (kidnapping is a word we use for this too)Taken for some kind of slaveryOne parent taking the children away illegallyTo replace a dead baby, a person may steal a live oneWhat other reasons can you think of that may cause a child to be missing? Can you understand the fear a family may feel if their child is lost?*Please comment with any ideas you can think of to help bring children back to their families.VERB: To missTo miss - to no longer find or locate. The child is missing.Like many other English verbs it has forms that can also be used as a noun so we will need to look at many uses and try to learn the difference. Can you think of a way that miss or forms of miss can be used as a noun? How else can miss be used? Are these examples below all verbs?Miss Johnson (unmarried lady named Johnson)To miss the targetMissing in action (military term for soldier who can not be found)Miss the ballTo miss the flightTo miss someoneMisses sizes (in some countries a clothing size for younger/smaller women)*Please do not miss your chance to comment on other ways that you might use miss.

Too many people here and around the world are losing important information on their computers because of computer viruses. There are also huge financial costs and damage to reputations from malware which can hide on your computer the same as a virus. Malware can steal your identity and financial information so others can steal from you. It spies on your web browsing and then reports back to the owner of the program. Just the kind of thing we all want on our computers, right? In the early days of personal computers a virus could only be spread by directly inserting removable media (we called them floppy disks) from someone else’s computer. Photos, games, homework or anything else could have a virus concealed on the disk with the desirable files. Even in this primitive version of file sharing we had big issues with viruses. One kind, detected the type of graphics card in your computer and then changed the settings so the wrong voltage was sent to your monitor. At best the monitor melted and was ruined. At worst, it burned down your house or dormitory room, maybe killing a few people from smoke inhalation. The people who wrote it did not intend that it spread beyond their original targets or that it would kill anyone. Why would smart people spend their time trying to hurt others or their equipment? It is difficult for me to imagine doing something to harm others like that. Yesterday I heard news commentators interviewing an expert about a new computer worm designed to destroy power plants (as in nuclear plants). This was done by one country to be able to hurt another country’s industry and shut down nuclear plants without bombs or missiles. I think bombs are a bad thing, but this could end up as bad or maybe worse.I am not sure how much better off the world is with a “Cyber War” capability being spread by computer networks. What happens when our virus programmer “wannabe” types get a copy of this professionally engineered worm? What if they make a few changes and the refinery, or power plant near you is taken down by the program. If it shuts off cooling water, there are many things that can react explosively. I think back to the melted monitors of the 1980’s and try to imagine an oil refinery or nuclear facility engulfed in smoke and flames. What happens to the sick person depending on electrical power to be able to breathe. What happens to communications, fire departments, newborn babies, older people on life support? It is not my decision who should have nuclear capabilities or who should not. All that I do know is that this is a world full of many good people. There are also many other people who could be good people if they were not paralyzed by fear, and kept that way by others who find it useful to have them afraid. It is just insanity to make any more virus programs, malware, or worms. That sums up my opinion of the people who would deliberately wreck things and I do not wish them well.WHAT CAN I DO TO PROTECT MYSELF?1. Never open an attachment you were not expecting to receive. Most of the bad programs reside in attachments in emails now that the floppy disk is mostly gone. It only takes a few seconds to ask your friend if they sent you something. TRUST NO ONE AS FAR AS ATTACHMENTS ARE CONCERNED. I avoid several virus attacks each year by doing exactly that.2. Use your head when traveling through sites on the internet. Much of the Malware is inserted through “cookies” when you visit a site. Cookies can be a good thing too. Some sites automatically know who I am because of good cookies stored by my browser and do not ask for my user name or password. If you turn off cookies you avoid a lot of the potential problems too.3. Buy a good antivirus program or download a free one like Avira. Avira has worked very well for us. If you want the premium version with no commercials or if you are a business you will have to pay. Otherwise you can do pretty well with the free version and using common sense about where you go and what you open. HERE IS A LINK: http://download.cnet.com/Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10322935.html?part=dl-10322935&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=11012914Also here is a review from a trusted source(PC Magazine) it covers many other antivirus and anti malware programs. Once you have malware it is difficult for many of the programs to remove it. I try to only go through a safe source like PC Magazine to download free programs. I have learned not to trust the first link the search engine finds. You never know who might have stuck a virus into a site that is not secure. Here is the link: http://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,2806,4796,00.asp4. Consider using a browser that tracks bad sites. Firefox is free and it lets you know if there have been reports of recent virus or malware activity on a page. It uses a color code to let you know the comparative safety of a site. I hear that Google Chrome is good too. This link is to the page describing firefox security in English. You can also view it in other languages. It is free and advanced in protection capability. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/features/#security5. Keep your antivirus program up to date and also your browsers. As soon as an exploit or vulnerability is found the better companies will make a security update available.6. Do not live in fear. Just be aware that you must be careful where you go and what you do. You would not go swimming in shark infested water with a bloody piece of raw meat tied to you. Likewise use your head with the internet and email.Be good and be safe. Bob

How to use "writeboard"

Using writeboardToday I want to share with you something that I have fond very useful. It is called writeboard (http://writeboard.com/) and this post has been done using it. Writeboard is collaborative software and completely free. With it you can collaborate with your friends on a written project.

collaborative = accomplished by collaboration: a collaborative report; collaborative effortscollaborate = to work with someone else on a joint project

Our blogs in My EC are a place we hope to share our thoughts and hopefully catch our mistakes before we post them We do have the option to go back and edit our bog posts so we can remove embarrassing mistakes.

This is a great tool we can use to track changes in our work and never lose the original by accident. Also our collaborators can make changes which we can see to accept, reject, or modify. I wish something like this had been available when I was working on my graduate degrees. It would have been so good if my professors could have seen that they were making the same suggestions over and over. One professor would mark up my writing, which I would change to his satisfaction. Then the other professor would change the wording back to my prior version or something close to it to meet his expectations. Over and over this went on with the person making changes to favor his own interest while the other would change emphasis to his field of study. By the end I was careful to follow suggestions exactly and then had them striking out their own words from a week or two before. I can LOL about this now, but then it was devastating. You can avoid endless changes from friends and advisors by using writeboard. All the previous changes are there to be seen, and after a few versions your collaborators can see what you added and what each of them added. That way agreement can be reached without anyone getting their ego in the way :p

Teaching your Baby English

Did you know that English Club has a page on Facebook? Did you know that they have other content there we can learn from? I just saw something amazing there and if you have young children you may want to go there and see it too.

It is designed to let you learn English along with your baby. I think it is a wonderful idea and you may follow this link to see for yourself. What better thing for your baby than to teach her English while you learn too. You can have a child advanced over his classmates and one who has an easier time learning a foreign language. Here is the link to this item you may like to see. After reading it again I see it is actually a part of our large EnglishClub.com site that I had not visited. If it had not been for Facebook I may have never seen it.Please let me know what you think about teaching English to your baby. I taught it to mine, but it was not so much intentionally (except when reading to them) because that is what we spoke at home.http://www.englishclub.com/young-learners/english-for-babies.htm

Floods in my town

Corpus Christi has gotten the most rain ever recorded here. We are still having rains here and some flooding but only 44 families have had their homes flooded, so not too major a disaster for most of the city.Of course our hearts go out to those with the home full of water. The families have been given shelter and food until the water goes down. Maybe the houses need to be moved to higher ground.I am not posting photos of this because we have all seen many flood photos lately. Some people have tried to keep driving when the water on the road is deep. Their cars and trucks are ruined by the water if they go too deep and the motor is hurt by the water. I hear one man is dead because the water washed his car off the road where it was crossing lke a swift river. We still send our best wishes and hopes to Pakistan who have had it much worse than we have. Our flooding will be gone quickly once the rain stops.

To upload photos or videos to your blog or comment is easy, but may take a while to discover on your own. I prefer to sometimes write in my text before the image so it will naturally be above the image. When you are ready for the image click the little camera icon in the little utility bar just below ENTRY it is in the image below with blue square around it. The ADD AN IMAGE window will then pop up.It usually works better to click the [Choose File] just below Upload an image.

That option will browse to your most recent directory accessed for files or your computer desktop. I prefer to rename my photo and put it on the desktop so I am certain to get the correct file. There are also options (click OPTIONS) to open them. You can choose to change the alignment of the image (left alignment is the default and you see that the options menu is against the left margin in my screen shot). You also can resize it or select to have text wrap around your image.

You even get the option to link to a full size original version of the photo. After you are finished with the options and you have clicked on your image you will need to wait while the code for it uploads. The code will be placed in the ENTRY screen below the point you left your cursor (hopefully below your text). Do not disturb or alter the code for the image and space beyond the last part of it before attempting to add more text.

You can also add more images but you need to have your cursor outside the area of the text and other images. The image needs a "clean" area to land. Videos are also added this way.The utility bar at the top is what allows you to alter your text and add content. From LEFT TO RIGHT the Icons are Bold, Italics, Underline, and Strike Through. Those deal with the text. Next is Link (that is a chain link) for hyperlinking to a website, the Camera Icon we have just discussed and finally the sheet of paper is for "Upload a file" with 7 MB limit.I hope this is helpful to you and you can start adding all kinds of media that you need and you can modify the text as you prefer.

My culture is better than yours and my way of doing things is the only correct way [yes most people tend to believe this]. Ethnocentrism is one of the first terms that I ever define to students when we study cultures. It is something that is normal for every culture and is something we all must try to overcome. Simply put, it means that we view our own culture as superior to other cultures. It is only natural that when you are brought up in a society, that the things you were taught were proper behavior for everyone would have been deeply ingrained in your world view. If you were taught to make eye contact when you speak to someone, you will feel something is wrong with someone who averts their gaze. If you were taught to bow slightly in greeting, you will feel uncomfortable with someone reaching out to grasp your hand and to shake it.If you have always stood 3 or more feet (1 meter) from people when you spoke face to face you will have felt very uncomfortable when someone moved to 1/3 that distance (30 cm) to speak to you. You unconsciously stepped backward to increase the distance until you were comfortably spaced. They also felt discomfort and stepped closer again. The sense of personal space is something that is different between cultures. In America we will only be close face to face if we are about to kiss someone or about to fight. People with a low distance of personal space, often feel Americans are unfriendly and withdrawn because they step back uncomfortably far. Likewise, Americans may get the feeling that people from these cultures are pushy, aggressive and uncomfortably familiar [remember we may be feeling that kissing or fighting is about to happen and we may not feel like doing either :-) ]Also in American culture, men do not touch each other except in rare occasions and touching women is also strictly limited. Hollywood may give a different idea, but please remember movies everywhere can distort the reality of the culture. When I was very young traveling in Europe I went through Brindisi, Italy and saw many young men walking down the streets holding hands or their arms around each other. To me that meant open homosexuality, but these same young men would approach my girlfriend (now my wife) if I was not holding her hand. She and I quickly realized the difference of this culture. Later on when we worked with the Bushmen in Botswana we were swarmed by people all wanting to touch and hold hands or arms while we talked. At first I felt very strange surrounded by these little women holding on to us and even stroking our arms or hair. Very quickly we were able to set aside our own cultural habits and enjoy the warmth of these people. What I am saying here is that there is no absolute right or wrong in culture. Every culture is valid for the people of that culture or it would no longer exist as a culture. An Anthropologist or anyone who wants to work successfully between different cultures must understand the concept of Cultural Relativism and fight against ethnocentrism. I may be able to show the bottom of my foot or let people see my left hand. You may be able to walk around in much less clothing than me, and still be properly dressed. Certain gestures that I am allowed to make could be very bad in your culture. We do not normally kiss on cheeks when greeting, but that may be the best type of greeting for you.I spent several years trying to teach well over a thousand American and International Business students these concepts. We should embrace the differences and be understanding of other cultures. We should not care if someone else has a different name for God, or if they view God as being composed of several gods. They are human and our brothers and sisters. We should love humanity for the differences and treat everyone with the respect they are due. My major concern was that these young Americans may go abroad and be insensitive to other cultures which would cause them problems and make others have a bad opinion of America and Americans.Culture is the means by which everyone learns to live and interact with others in their lives. It used to be enough to understand your own culture. Today the world is "smaller", as they say. Each country and the culture (or cultures) within it must interact with other countries and cultures. You members of English Club are the beginning of a new generation of a global economy with global interaction. We can no longer afford to let hatred or misunderstanding interfere with the advancement of humanity. You will be the future of the world. You who learn English will be the bridge between cultures to help bring all of the competing groups and countries together for the better of mankind. To do this we must put our own culture on a lower shelf so it is no longer central to everything we do. We do not abandon it, but we realize that there are many right ways to do things.Next, and maybe harder, we must put our personal religious beliefs on a shelf where there is also room for tolerance of other people's religious beliefs. Picture this as a large shelf which can contain many things which are good. We must understand that other religions are also important to their believers and may be the best belief for those particular people. This may be hard for certain Christians who have been taught that there is ONE WAY to the grace of God and that is through Jesus. It will also be hard for many believers of Islam who have been taught that Islam is the only path. I have read the holy books and know that they all say many things that can be read by people in different ways. I like to believe that there would not be a God who would only favor one people and would be just as happy to see all others killed or converted. That is what I would like to believe. But what I believe personally does not matter, because I have to place it carefully on a shelf where all other peoples beliefs can also be placed. I have to view this shelf as a shelf of good. It must be a shelf that is level and no part of it is above another. For me to operate as a human I must stay away from Ethnocentrism and my beliefs must be on the shelf with everyone else's. This is the way we can all communicate without mistrust and hatred. It is the only way I can exist. I have to believe for myself that every culture, every language, and every religion is equally good for the people that believe in them. I can still have my own private beliefs, but must realize that they are mine and not necessarily better just because they belong to me.Please try to tolerate others who believe differently, and on this day, please remember all who died nine years ago and all of those who have died since then, without hatred or prejudice. Violence and war are not the answer to the differences of the world. Remember the terms "cultural relativism" and "ethnocentrism". Look them up and try to always keep them in mind.PLEASE ---Love everyone and make the world better.Bob

A talented lady

A few years a go I noticed a talented actress because the part she played seemed so real and human. I saw her again in another movie where she was once again a character that I felt could be real. I am going to post a few photos of her here with some of the changes she has gone through so she can "be" the person she is playing.

This was the first character I saw her play and was set in the 1920's or 1930's.

This role was also very good and I felt a sympathy for her character as she was in love with someone.

And here is another character with very different personality in the 1860's.

You have probably seen at least one of her movies and may likely know her name. I like her not because she is a pretty lady, but because she has a lot of talent. If you can name one of her movies please do comment. If you like any of her work, I would also like to know what you liked.

Is Music Important to Humanity?

I believe that music is important in our lives. In modern day life we are surrounded by music at various times of the day. At times we may hear no human-made music, but still hear the music of nature. Some may argue that the "songs" of birds, insects and frogs are not music at all but just communication. To that I respond, What is music if not communication? It can be the communication of excitement or sadness. It can be communication of joy, longing, or a religious message. Regardless of the content, I contend that music is a form of communication, not just with animals in the wild, but with humans too.Who has not heard a mother singing softly to her baby? Haven't we all heard a person walking alone as they hum to themselves some comforting tune. I have my own opinions as to why music is important to people, but I really want to know what others think about this. It is present in every culture, no matter how remote and "untouched by civilization".Do you think music is a form of communication for people? If not, what do you think it really is? Do you believe it is important for most if not all people? What makes good music and what makes some music not very good? I am sure you have an opinion if you think about this question. Can music help you learn a language if you learn to sing the words of songs? I have been told that most people remember things that are in the form of songs or chants more readily than words not in such forms. For me that does seem to work well.I would really and truly love to hear your opinions. I know you all have some opinions on music and this is a good chance for you to practice your English by commenting here. There is no need to be shy if you are still a learning to write in English. All learners make mistakes and that is how they improve their language skills. Maybe you can use some words that are new to you and expand your vocabulary.I also ask that you consider posting a link to some favorite music of yours in your comment and telling all of us why it is a favorite. Why do you think music is important or not?

A stupid little poem

Here is a work in progress for us to play with in the poetry group. It is nothing elegant, but more or less rhymes. You are welcome to copy it and rework with better wording. It was too long to post in my status and I didn't want to put it in the wrong place in the poetry group. Please do chop this up and rewrite it for practice. It is just for fun and really needs some work. Here it is, a stupid little poem called:English ClubbingIf words express our thoughts of lifeand feelings through both calm and strife. Then, why wait in the house reflecting, while our friends we are neglecting?Instead our silence must be brokenwith blog or chat or other token,of our willingness to share, our language efforts since we care.To help each other is our dutyrevealing dreams, thoughts, feelings, beauty. We can’t be timid with our grammar, though we could err and we might stammer. We correct our missteps and keep goingso glad our language skills are growing. We’ll help our friends and they’ll help us.So write we will, and blog we must!bob ;)

We Love our Families

We all love our families. Every culture in the world recognizes families, but not all cultures consider the same people to be their kin. You may ask, "How can that be"?Did you know that in some cultures the son goes to live with his mother's brother because he is kin to him but not in the same clan as his own father? In certain cultures a woman may have more than one husband and in others a man may have more than one wife. The world is a very different place once we leave our own culture and start to look at the ways of other peoples. Are they wrong because they believe differently than we do? Would they maybe think our way of doing things is wrong?I hope people will think about these things and discuss them by commenting on this blog. I will soon have my group ready to join and it will have more detail on this. Everyone please look at the terms below. Besides yourself and your brothers and sisters you have:fatherfather's fatherfather's motherfather's brotherwife of father's brotherchildren of father's brotherfather's sisterhusband of father's sisterchildren of father's sistermothermother's fathermother's mothermother's brotherwife of mother's brotherchildren of mother's brothermother's sisterhusband of mother's sisterchildren of mother's sisterYour own husband or wifetheir parentstheir brothers and sistersthe children of their brothers and sistersYou may be starting to get the idea that this can be complicated. Now go to my page and look at the picture album of family and kinship. I have used the kinship terms from my culture for the persons. Can you use the photos to help you determine the correct kinship term for the people in the list above? Examples of some terms we use in English are Grandfather, Grandmother, Great Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, Great Aunts and Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and various in-laws. I cannot list all here but if you work on this it will help you with understanding kinship terms wen you see them in English. If people comment and wish to know more, I will be happy to share.I also want to know what these people are called in your own language. We will share with each other and we will all learn.
