  • I'd like to renew this discussion for many people have problems with the future in the past tenses. Today I will tell you about The Future in the Past, Simple and Continuous. First of all, we should state what future in the past is. It is a time period in the elapsed past that was in the future at some moment in the past. I will try to add a graph.

The Future in the Past, Simple

    The form of the predicate:

    would + infinitive without "to"

We use this tense in the following cases:

    1. When we describe a future-in-the past action as a fact

I thought he would do that.

    2. When we describe some regular action

He said he would often call.

    3. When we enumerate a few actions following one another

I thought I would come home and would be able to have some rest

The Future in the Past, Continuous (Progressive)

    The form of the predicate:

    would + be + V-ing

We use this tense to descride:

    1. An action that that was not finished at some moment in the future in the past.

He said he would be lecturing at 2 p.m. the next day

    2. An action that took place during some period in the future in the past:

I thought I would be travelling in June.

    3. An action that describes our intentions:

I thought I would be missing him

It is necessary to remember that in any future or future in the past sentences we never use future tenses in the time clauses and real conditional clauses. It the future in the past in this case we should use the past tenses (Simple, or Continuous):

I was sure if we hurried up, we wouldn't miss the train

He said he didn't know when the conference started

  • First of all, I'd like to say that this group of Tenses is called "Future-in-the-Past". The Simple and Continuous Tenses are often used both in spoken and written English when we describe some events of the past. We use this group of Tenses to describe an action that is in the past at the present moment but was in the future relatively some moment in the past. For example:

He said he would come the next day (It was somewhen in the past)

The tenses of this group are used exactly like the future tenses. We just replace "will" by "would"

Would you like me to describe each Tense of this group?
