Root crops challenge

These all grow underground and are used in many recipes. See if you can name them in English and then tell us how you like to prepare them, if you wish.

The orange ones on the left are common in most countries.  Those in the center are sometimes cooked along with their leaves (or greens).  Both parts are good to eat.

Those on the right are not as easy to see in the photo, but are very red, even on the inside. I bet most of you have eaten these at some time in your lives, but we don't see them in every country.

Good luck with the English names, and do please tell us how you like to prepare one of these for eating.

  • Thanks Nida and Resmi. You are both correct.  The ones on the right are beets.  In the center we have turnips.  At home we boil the leaves of the turnip and eat them as well as the roots. The turnip greens are cooked in salted water or many people will use salt pork instead.  We put a pepper sauce on the greens also.  It is made by pouring boiling vinegar on hot chili peppers and allowing them to season the vinegar.

The carrots are good raw or cooked.  We may shred or grate them to add to rice along with rasins and spices.  We also like to boil them with a little butter added.

I like the recipe submitted by Resmi.  I will have to try it some time.

  • Nice challenge, Sir....

    Let me try.....

    1. Orange ones on the left are carrots and I think everybody in the world is familiar with them. We eat them in a lot of different ways. For example, we eat them without adding anything or without cooking, we use them in the salads, we sometimes boil them along with potatoes and green peas. We also make a sweet dish out of them with addition of milk, sugar and dry fruit. They are also used in pickles.

    2. Ones in the middle are turnips. We use them in curries and pickles.

    3. I'm unable to see the roots on the right clearly. But I guess they are sugar beets. We use them in salads usually.

This is another kind of root that we can eat which is also red.  This one is not red on the inside and is hot.  It burns your mouth a little and is sometimes cut up in salads.  I have seen children cry after tasting this because it burns.

This root is called a radish and the root in the challenge above is not. The red root above is not hot or spicy in taste.

    • Here in my country "white radish" is more commonly eaten than red radish. In fact, red ones are a newer variety here and is available at a few places only. And I feel their taste is more or less very same. But yes, red radish is somewhat more "good looking" than whit radish. :)))
