Having your first child is another along with having the child marry and present you with a grandchild. Marriage is considered very important to most religions and cultures. Everywhere the rules are a little different, but there are some central guidelines that that overlap between most peoples. There is no marriage without some disagreement or hurt feelings from one side or the other. Fighting or disagreeing with your spouse is common, at least over small issues.I think everyone will agree that there are good marriages and bad marriages. What in your opinion, makes a bad marriage? Or to ask differently, what do you think would make a marriage bad? What would make one good?</div>Topics On Relationships Between Countrieshttps://www.myenglishclub.com/groups/Ethicalchoices/forum/topics-on-relationships2010-09-14T01:14:33.000Z2010-09-14T01:14:33.000ZMr. Bobhttps://www.myenglishclub.com/members/MrBob<div>Here we may want to discuss treaties, wars, sanctions, trade, diplomatic pressure, invasions, blockades and other good and bad things that governments do to each other and their peoples. This is your forum to bring up a topic as long as you can tie it in with ethics ad ethical choices. I would like to offer up a rule or guideline for this forum. It is easy to find something that a government has done and can be considered wrong. I fully expect that we will get many such topics.<b>I ask that in addition to the action you object to that you also add 2 or 3 other things along with it.</b>1. Why you think that action was taken when the decision was made and what other choices there may have been?2. What would have been the more ethical choice in your opinion?3. What could be done now to resolve the problem in the most ethical way?Your comment can begin a new topic so that we have many going or you can respond to a topic by starting out with the @ symbol and the title of the topic (or name of the person) you are commenting on.</div>Harassmenthttps://www.myenglishclub.com/groups/Ethicalchoices/forum/harassment-12010-09-14T00:47:16.000Z2010-09-14T00:47:16.000ZMr. Bobhttps://www.myenglishclub.com/members/MrBob<div>There are many kinds of harassment and it is too common at work in some places. We can define it as picking on or teasing someone, or otherwise saying things to make them feel badly. There is also sexual harassment where a person in a position of power misbehaves toward someone with less or no power. This can especially be bad if the boss acts in this way either demanding sex or making employees put up with very indecent language or behavior. Most companies now have rules against this. In my country we now have a law to protect employees form this and if it is proven that sexual harassment has happened the company will have to pay a lot of money. It is pretty clear that harassment is unethical.Do you know that it is not just a boss or other employees that may be affected by harassment or claims of harassment. There are other relationships where the more powerful (or possibly more mature) person in the relationship could take advantage of the person lower in the relationship. That is why there are rules of ethics for many professions prohibiting a relationship with others they know in a professional capacity. Examples are:Doctor and patientTeacher and studentMilitary officer and lower rank peopleCan you think of others that either have such rules or maybe should have such rules?</div>The Ticking Time Bombhttps://www.myenglishclub.com/groups/Ethicalchoices/forum/the-ticking-time-bomb2010-09-14T00:29:01.000Z2010-09-14T00:29:01.000ZMr. Bobhttps://www.myenglishclub.com/members/MrBob<div>An old ethical problem we see sometimes with law enforcement is the so called ticking time bomb scenario. You receive information about a crazy bomb maker and capture him, but he has already placed his bomb. You find his written notes which show that the bomb is very large and dangerous. It is in a public place (possibly a school or hospital) and his notes indicate that hundreds of people will be killed in less than 10 minutes from now when it explodes. You try to talk to the crazy guy but he just laughs in your face and says he will never tell. It is illegal to take a hammer and smash his toes or pull out his finger nails or any of the other horrible things you might think of that might get him to talk before so many people are killed. You are hired to enforce the law, not to break it. You are also hired to save lives. The clock is ticking, what will you do? Is it ethical?Another example if you have trouble relating to the police officer: A crazy person has taken your little sister and hurt her. he has cut off her finger to show you that he really has her. He has her buried alive and there is not much air so she may die in an hour or maybe less.He is demanding money from you before he will tell where she is buried. It is much more money than you can possibly get. Maybe you could rob the bank down the street, but you might have to kill the guard and if you don't you are still breaking a very serious law. The man keeps laughing in your face telling you that the missing finger is not so bad because she will die very soon when she runs out of air. There is a heavy wooden bat near your hand will you pick it up? Will you pray? Will you just cry for your little sister? Will you break the law? Will you break the bad mans legs? What will you do with so little time to decide?</div>The most difficult choicehttps://www.myenglishclub.com/groups/Ethicalchoices/forum/the-most-difficult-choice2010-09-14T00:00:36.000Z2010-09-14T00:00:36.000ZMr. Bobhttps://www.myenglishclub.com/members/MrBob<div>The group would like to hear about your most difficult choice you have had to make concerning ethics? Here is a chance to tell what you think you should have done or to ask your friends what they would have done.We can all learn from each other.</div>Reporting Bad or Illegal Behaviorhttps://www.myenglishclub.com/groups/Ethicalchoices/forum/reporting-bad-or-illegal2010-09-13T23:57:32.000Z2010-09-13T23:57:32.000ZMr. Bobhttps://www.myenglishclub.com/members/MrBob<div>Is it ethical to not report a crime you see being committed or that you know will be committed? What if the law says you must report a crime, but your group of friends say it is wrong to tell and you would become a snitch? What if the person breaking the law is someone you dislike a whole lot? What if the person breaking the law is your friend or family member? What if a friend you trust takes your identity and does something wrong while pretending to be you and you are accused of doing something you did not do?</div>Ethical Dilemmahttps://www.myenglishclub.com/groups/Ethicalchoices/forum/ethical-dilemma2010-09-13T23:50:19.000Z2010-09-13T23:50:19.000ZMr. Bobhttps://www.myenglishclub.com/members/MrBob<div>An Ethical dilemma is a situation in which a person is faced with two choices which conflict with their ethical system. For example in your ethical system stealing is always wrong. Also letting one's family die from starvation is always wrong.A person in such a situation would be forced to commit one wrong to avoid committing another wrong. Which does she choose, steal food to keep ,her children alive, or let them starve to avoid stealing.Whichever choice she makes will put her in conflict with those whose view of the acts varied from her own. Maybe she could be executed or imprisoned for making either of the choices. In New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, many people were faced with the same dilemma. Break the window of the store to steal food or drinking water, or watch their baby die for lack of food or drinkable water.Which would you choose? Please tell some ethical dilemmas you can think of.</div>Medical Ethics Discussions #1 Euthanasiahttps://www.myenglishclub.com/groups/Ethicalchoices/forum/medical-ethics-discussions-12010-09-13T23:30:49.000Z2010-09-13T23:30:49.000ZMr. Bobhttps://www.myenglishclub.com/members/MrBob<div>Euthanasia we will define as the deliberate stopping of a person's life by the actions of the medical staff. Some people feel that this may be appropriate in some circumstances. Other people feel that in no circumstance should a doctor give a medicine that she knows will cause the patient to die.How do you feel about this? Should it be legal or should doctors be punished if they do this? What if the patient has massive injuries like the lower half of the body torn off in an accident and is screaming in great pain and begging to die? What if the patient is in a mental depression, but otherwise healthy, and just wants to die? These are very difficult questions and I have given examples of two extremes. There is no wrong answer, because I am asking what you think.</div>
