What if I have 5 minutes to reply to friends and look at new photos, but no time for anything else? The chat room is helpful to many people but we don't always have time and it really SLOWS old computers down. Part of the problem may also be with a non-responsive script that keeps popping up ( Script: https://static.ning.com/socialnetworkmain/widgets/lib/core.min.js?xn_version=2765273374:3 )

I wonder if there is a way to completely turn chat off? I know that you can make it show you as being offline, but you are still using bandwidth and it seems like it makes it take longer to do anything else.  I want to turn it off sometimes.  Does anyone know a way to completely turn chat off until next time you log on?

I would really appreciate it if you can give me a tip on how to do this :)

  • Hi Bob,

    After signing in, I can see a red dot beside the Options. And, if I click on the Options, a rectangle box will appear which reads "You are disconnected from chat. Go online." 

    Yes, I can see a blue bubble there, and if I move my cursor onto it, it says "Start chatting!". That's what I can see on my screen.

    But, maybe we should find time to chat with other members in the chat room from time to time. Do you think so?

    Is the script still bothering you?

    • The script problem has not bothered me in the past hour, but I did have everything close and an error message generated to send Microsoft.  That also happened last night.

      As for chatting, I agree it is good to do.  I was just frustrated by the problems it caused my computer. At home I can take time to chat, at work I leave the computer on and come quickly between classes to take care of business.  I also use classroom computers with the screen projected on the wall to show students what we can do in MyEC.  Those times we don't chat because we are examining all the features.  We may say hello to someone and then go to something else.

      I am encouraging the students to write online so they can see everyone's work and we can talk about how to improve blogs. It is not the original intent of the club, but it can be useful when students use it.  The shy ones have to do their writing on a private school website so they don't show their work to the world.

    • Have you ensured that Javascript is enabled on your browser? Tech Help thinks this may be blocking the script and is causing this message to appear. Search in your browser's help section for "enable Javascript" to find the steps to do this.

  • You are right. The network does try and reach the Chat feature. There is no way to turn it off completely without us disabling chat from MyEC. Sorry, Bob!

    Regarding the unresponsive script, please tell me which
    browser you are using and what page exactly this appears on. Tech help wants to investigate.

      I have gotten the same response when trying to open other people's pages, look at photos or other activities.  When I posted this discussion I got the script problem on every new page I tried to open.  The other one I got was: Script: https://static.ning.com/englishclubdotcom/instances/shared/js/set_co...

      I hope they can find the cause.  I am doing nothing different on the computer than I have since I was given it many months ago.  :)

  • Disconnect it - I had the same problem  until I found it was the chat room and I disconnected it. Now, it always shows "Disconnected" and "Offline" and everything seems to be back on track again.

    And, you could read the blogs and comments without signing in. Sure, if you want to visit your own page or publish a blog post or add comments, then you have to sign in, and possibly the chat room will slow you down unless you have the problem solved.

    BTW, no such script keeps appearing on my computer.

      I'm not sure how exactly to disconnect the chat.  Maybe you can share what you did in case others have the same problem later.  I know how to close the new chat bar which tries to cover the bottom of my screen, but that connects me to chat when I had been off before.  Then I have to click the options button again and it goes from green to red. Does that mean I am disconnected?

      There is still a small rectangular box in the lower right with a blue speech bubble, but maybe that is what I want.  Maybe just closing that bar is what I needed to do.  Before it turned the chat button green so I avoided doing it.
