Some of us, who were born in non English speaking country, found that learning English is so hard. Especially the tenses, that makes me going crazy all the time. How could people speak English so easily, and change the tenses so naturally. How do they learn? Some natives said that they didn't really learn about grammar when they were in school. And what is really interesting, how a child could master it by only from daily conversation.I think, my language is the simplest and the easiest to learn. you don't have to find an easy way to learn, because it is already so so easy. In 3 months you can even give a speech and make people cry (in a good way of course), no doubt. You don't have to learn about tenses! There is no past tense, so you don't have to change the verb. You just only have to say yesterday, or last bla bla bla... We don't even think to say something in past perfect tense, what on earth is that? Of course we have grammars, but let me say it once again, it is the easiest in the world, world guiness record should put it on the list! And, one more thing, is the pronunciation. Oh my goodness, forgive the creator or some people who had made this so complicated... I joined the homophone quiz and some pronunciation games in this site few months ago, and belive me, some words are irregular. In my language you just have to read it, the sounds will not different. The phonetic wont be different. We just have to say just like how a-z sound. Simple, easy, and so much fun (though some people qualify daring as sort of fun). That is why, in our language, there is no spelling competition. How could spelling become a competition, because even a child can have 100 score to spell words. So if you want to master other language, learn Indonesia or bahasa (malay)... Haha... At least you can travel here alone. But English is one of the international language, so that is such a pain in the ass... (I try to find some English idiom for this, and that one is pretty gross). And me, as one of the avid learners here who have a vivid dream to master it.Btw, if it is compared to other language like French and German, some people say that they have more complicated grammar and hard to pronounce, just like French, I can't even pronounce mercy correctly until now.And Mandarin, omigosh, the chinese characters! I will take years and years and years for me to master it, the intonation are unbelievable...How about, greek, latin, arab? I think there are more harder language to learn. You can't even read it.So... Is English a really hard language to learn? Why? What's harder? How about yours?

  • Yes chinese is way more difficult! But the grammar is quite simple. How about portuguese?
  • Agree! :)
  • Agree! So, do you learn any other language Noor?
  •         Hi my friend, from my experience I can say that; nothing comes easy, includes learning any foreign language. Learning foreign language needs to fall in love with this language and needs practicing daily, reading, writing, listening, speaking and courage.  Yes you need courage, especially when you start speaking this foreign language. Most of us can easily read and write a foreign language, which he or she focuses his or her best to learn, but unfortunately, when she or he starts speaking this language he or she starts hesitating and they stop talking. My friend, do you know why?????  It is very simple reason because, they try their best to follow the grammar while they speak this foreign language. A afraid of making grammar mistakes it is a huge obstacle faces any one needs to speak a foreign language, so, all what he or she does is; speaking, yes, just speaking without following grammar, then grammar comes by itself, that how children learn the language and that how we learn our tongue language.

These days I speak two foreign languages, English and French. I have worked hard. I have never waste my time on nothing, I always have something to do especially doing my best to take these two foreign languages to the next level. I also never have wasted any opportunity to speak in English or French or traveling to countries their native languages are English or French.

Finally, most of EC members know that my mother language is Arabic. Arabic is very rich, graceful and poetry language. It is easy to learn it as long as you fall in love with it. I can’t deny that its grammar is difficult, sort of, but with working a little bit hard you can speak it fluently. I know some American and European who speak Arabic as if Arabic their mother tongue.

My friend, thanks for the lovely topic. God bless you and your family as well.

    • Interesting answer, yes I bet that is how we learn our mother tounge! I think I should practice more often, so it become more natural day by day, and the grammar will come by itself. You have so interesting life Sewar. Why are tou learning French? You are travelling a lot right Sewar?
  • ENGLISH is an international language, before we learn how to speak other language we need to understand English first, even in a dictionary, (other language translate into English then you will translate it into your language) to master English you really need to work hard, but there's a lot of way on how to learn English language and it's up to you, how you will work for it ^_^

    • How is your experience, as I know, English is second language in Phillipine, so it is easier to learn there, isn't? How about tagalog? Is it hard to learn? One of options to continue my study is in Phillipine.

There are also some people who speak spanish. How about you? It is so beneficial to live in a country with many language spoken.
    • Tagalog language is our mother tongue so it's easy for us to learn it. Yeah English is our second language not really easy but we need to learn it for us to communicate with some other Filipino co'z some Filipino can't really understand Tagalog. We have a lot of different language.

I'm not interested in other language just my mother tongue and English language only ^__^

So you're going to continue your study here in Philippines ?

  •  Interesting discussion Stephen! I don't think English is the hardest language in the world at all. For me, any language has its own peculiarities ( I try not to call "difficulties" because it's like you yourself put a hurdle before you to learn it). I think , as a learner, I have the duty to internalise all that "incomprehensible" (at least, at first sight) grammar rules If I do want to learn that language. Otherwise, I won't be able to move me to another level that language. But, I believe there are languages with more things to learn and asimilate, aspects which I would say that need more attention from learners. Russian, Chinese are one of the languages which I think are "more hard" to learn using your own words for this post. So, Stephen, that's it for my pointview!

    • Yes, I think so, English is not the heardest. Thank you for your point of view. How about your language, does it have complicated grammar rules?
