People love freedom, of course.

However, when we talk about freedom, long for freedom, fight for freedom, are we thinking what is the real meaning of feedom?

Doing anything you want.

Saying anything you want.

Travelling anywhere you want.

Getting anything you want.

... ...

Are they really mean the freedom? Are we really happy because of them?

I am confused when my teahcer asked me how you identify "freedom".

Please give me some your valubale ideas!

I've no idea about it, only I know is I don't think freedom means "free to do, say, get anything you want"  I think Freedom is also need to be based on some orders.

  • There is no such thing as complete freedom. We are all bound by the rules, customs and laws of our societies. In Australia, freedom means being able to do what you want provided it doesn't conflict with the law or hurt anyone else. For example, I can work where I want, live where I want, say most things, choose my friends, decide if I want to follow a religion, go overseas, buy what I like, and have the friends I choose.

I cannot steal, intentionally injure other people or animals, say bad things that are untrue about other people, and much more.

Freedom also means being able to go to bed at night and know your government will not come into your house and arrest you for something you have said or that they don't like.

    • Hi~ Dr llody!

your opinion is really special, do you mean freedom is that every individual idea could be respected by others?

hmm, sounds that similar with freedom means harmony because human beings respect each other.

       thanks your share! :)

  • in my point of view freedom is to express your opinion on the way u like  and without being afraid from someone :)  and doing all u like without harming anyone :) many peaple spend their live fighting just to win the right of being free especially in arabic countries(palastine ) and like what we saw in the latest month 'Tunisia ,egypt ,syria, ...' freedom = live cause imagine yourself not free , not able to do what u like ,not able to express  yourself so u are like a slave so it isn't live :/
    • Fatma, thank your sharing! :)

After reading your reply, I have an idea that maybe the freedom have different meaning , not have to be a general meaning. Depents on different situation, we have different understanding of freedom. People in the dictatorship, maybe freedom means force the dictatorship gorvenor step down and build a new democratic country. HMM, though I don't think democratic means freedom, however, we move forward.

    • Paula! happy to share with your opinion.

Freedom also means you could become the one you want to become. I love this point.

Freedom means a lot things, however, it is more important to me that if i could have chances to become the human being that i want. It is not easy, you have to know what kind of being you want to be, then freedom could help you to fulfill.

I am not sure of the real meaning of freedom, I have a lot of questions than can not be answered. It's ok. A philosopher said human being is the being who question being self, I love his point.

    • UraN, I really appreciate your quotation which is written by that french writer!

Hmm, nowadays, educated people will know that religion is a kind of way to control the country, not just a believe or faith. and many young people today don't believe any GOD at all. We think we are secular atheists. however,if disagree with religion and believe or holy symbol and we also should respect their choice of beleive, that's a feedom.

  • Hello, idealist!

To my mind, freedom is to do something favorite which harms no one surrounding.

Specifically, I wish to travel anywhere I love because it's my dream to discover more and more. I think it does no harm to anyone. It is just my parents that hesitate to allow me to do so because I am quite inexperienced. So, I think I'll try harder to work off my parents' worry and to achieve my freedom

    ^^

    • HI~~My, it seems that long time didn't talk with you~~~so sorry for my lazy~~:(

happy to see your reply here, hmmm, I AGREE WITH YOU SO MUCH! there seems a line always exists to remind us we have to stop use our freedom right, because if we cross that line, the freedom will deteriorate to the result we never expect .

I THINK MAYBE fayroz'S OPINION IS RIGHT, THE FREEDOM FOR US MEANS "will to choose". We choose freely according to our will ( like you choose to respect your parents) while we choose to take the responsibilities of our choices.

    • ROSE, NICE TO MEET YOU HERE! :)

I am kind of confused about your opnion....hmmm, could you explain it more to me?

I THINK you propose a new idea for the definition of freedom.

      thank you again!

  • Not having restrictions forced upon to you, by something, or someone else.

It's all right to have restriction set to you, by your self, by your own judgment and conviction, but, if it's set up by someone else, even when you agree with them, then the freedom is already compromised..

A single person have very difficult to have a freedom, because he/she usually lives in society that needs to be coordinated together with all freedoms. It's easier to have a freedom by a bigger body that contains a bigger group of people. A country? Yet, even one single country can't have freedom because it have usually to coordinate with other countries. So to get more freedom, the easiest without losing your own freedoms, could be to invade other countries and force your own beliefs and laws to them, until the whole earth is one.. But still not free? Being captivated to one single planet, in one small solar system. Need to build a spaceship and invade the whole universe.. But maybe there's a parallel universe? Need to expand also to there. Liberate all the universes.. with your own freedom.

So is the freedom then just a utopia?

Yeah freedom probably really is utopia, that can never achieved in 100% perfection. But it can still achieved, depending of your mind set. You can sit in a cage, but still be free in your dreams.. It all depends what one person needs for his, or her happiness and how he/she defines the freedom.

So, when someone ask how to identify freedom, then the answer depends.... I suppose the closest answer is to go to roots, and tell what freedom means to you personally. What kind of restrictions could be unbearable for you. But if the questioner wanted more general answer.. It means more work, to find out what most of people have common in their definitions of freedom. ^_^
