  • Here are the corrections for Sentences 7 -10

    7. What is wrong in this conversation? (two mistakes!)

A: Check your emails, please, I sent you an email.

B: Yes, I have got your email yesterday, thanks.

    CORRECT is:

A: Check your emails, please, I've sent you an email.

B: Yes, I got your email yesterday, thanks.

    Explanation:

Person A speaks about an email without mentioning when person A had sent it. Person A did not say a specific time.

If we don't mention a specific time, we have to say "I have (I've) sent you an email.

If we mention a specific time, we have to say “I sent” you an email, yesterday, (before two hours, last night, etc.).

    8. Tonight, I want to cook myself for dinner.

CORRECT is:   8. Tonight, I want to cook dinner by myself. Also: Tonight, I want to cook dinner for me.

    Explanation:

If you say “I want to cook myself” it means you would be the dish...(would be funny!)

    9. Could you borrow me some money; I forgot my purse.

CORRECT is:  9. Can you lend me some money; I forgot my purse.

    Explanation:
"Borrowing" means that you are the recipient of something, you ask someone to give you something for some time.
"Lending" means that someone is the giver; he gives you something for some time.

    10. The presentation is ready; can you tell me how it looks like?

CORRECT is:  10. The presentation is ready; can you tell me how it looks.

    Explanation:

"How" in this sentence indicates, I want to know your opinion about the presentation of appearance and content (for example).

By using "how", it must never be used together with "like" after look/s. "How something/someone looks" doesn't ask for comparison with something else.

The answer would be: "The presentation looks good.".

If you want to compare, you have to use "What" e.g.: "What does it look like?"

    Example:

A: I never met your brother. How does he look?

B: He is tall, slim, and handsome.

A: Can you tell me what he looks like?

B: Well, in my opinion, he looks like Brad Pitt.

  • Dear friends and members of  MyEC.
Here are the Corrected sentences  1 - 6

The number of letters are limited, that's why I had to divide.

    1. According to me, this is the best restaurant in town.

    CORRECT is:

    1. In my opinion, (I believe, I think, etc.), this is the best restaurant in town.

    Explanation:

"According to" can't be used if we speak about OUR OWN opinion, belief, thinking, etc.

"According to" reflects the opinion (belief, thinking, etc.) of others.

    2. I met her for the first time in Berlin five years before.

    CORRECT is:

    2. I met her for the first time in Berlin five years ago.

    Explanation:

In sentence 2, we speak about something in the past that happened in relation to the present. It includes a specific time (minutes, hours, months etc.)

That's why we have to use "ago". It means that it has been five years since I met her.

Before” is used when referring to a specific event in relation to another event or time.

E.g .: I met her for the first time in Berlin before I visited her in London.

I met her in Berlin before you did.

    3. Most of people have a computer.

    CORRECT is:

    3. Most people have a computer.

In this sentence, we speak generally (here, about all people). In that case, we don't add “of” or “of the”.

E.g .: Most students have a job alongside their studies. (speaking generally, means each student has a job alongside their studies.)

E.g.: Most of the students at my university work alongside their studies. (Speaking about a specific group of students who has a job alongside their studies.)

    4. My little granddaughter is having a dog.

    CORRECT is:

    4. My little granddaughter has a dog.

    Explanation:

Using of “is having” in a phrase implicates “giving birth to”.

    5. What is wrong in this conversation?
    A: I don't like crowded places.
B: Me too, I can't even breathe there.

    CORRECT is:

    A: I don't like crowded places.
    B:
Me neither, I can't even breathe there.

    Explanation:

We agree in this sentence with a negative phrase, (statement, opinion,etc.).

That's why we have to say “Me neither”.

Me too” is only correct if we agree with positive Phrases, (statements, opinions, etc.). e.g.: A: I like sweets. B: Me too, I can't help eating them.

    6. We have been waiting for you since two hours.

    CORRECT is:

    6. We have been waiting for you for two hours.

    Explanation:

In this sentence, we speak about the duration (period) of time. We mention how long an action or event has continued.

That's why we have to say: We have been waiting for you for two hours.

'Since' is followed by a point of time in the past, not a period of time.

E.g.: We have been waiting for you since yesterday. We have been waiting for you since you left the your house.

  • Do not worry dear Rose,  i am ready to provide more hankys if you have shortage of it.....lol.....it happens, so smile.....

    • You are so kind, dear bet. Thanks.
