Who You Gonna Call? … Stress Buster!

I confess I love gardening. I don’t have a lavish space as big as a park to manage. What I have is an itsy bitsy garden at home where most of my plants are in containers. It is true what other people say that ‘if there’s a will, there’s a way’. It applies to gardening as well. It’s because if you’re a plant lover, you tend to find or search for facts to make your plants thrive and survive regardless of the space and location you have.

Gardening is not just a hobby. I experienced the benefits of it to my well being. It’s like an addiction in a good way where you can burn lots of calories through frequent walking, by simply tending and checking out the plants one by one to observe their growth and if whether they are bothered by pests. Should I say it’s a cheapest form of exercise? Who needs a gym to get fit anyway? Kidding! Furthermore, seeing the plants grow prolifically from seedling to a mature one makes us proud and gives us the sense of achievement. And when they bloom is like icing on a cake!

I can attest to other plant lovers that gardening is a stress reliever in fact, my stress buster. Why? Because it keeps our mind off from the proliferation of negative and fake news, the drama, and the hustle and bustle of tedious, everyday tasks. Moreover, this hobby balances our perspective in life as well as enhances endorphin, the happy hormone in our body, which makes us feel better just by touching the plants or mixing the soil with our bare hands. You might wear a pair of gloves if you have a sensitive skin, though.

I learned that gardening is also a form of therapy for people with illnesses and has been practiced in nursing homes. It would be a bonus for us if we’re living healthily yet we enjoy gardening or growing our own food. It would give us the opportunity to live longer because of the satisfaction it provides. So if you have a chance to grow plants you love or even edibles, why hesitate? We are already living with lots of pollution around us and getting our home greener would be the first step towards a healthy lifestyle. Let’s make our world a better place to live in by incorporating plants in our home. Are you up for the challenge? What's your confession?

Thank you for reading my blog! Happy gardening!

  • Hello, Adaline!

A bunch of thanks for commenting on my blog. I admire your garden as it is full of serene and jaw-dropping beauties. Whenever I have a free time, I watch videos about the British gardens' documentaries on YouTube and it's always been over-whelming (in a positive way of course). It's interesting the locations are like huge parks yet they're considered as gardens!

You're right though. With gardening we can be inspired with what it offers, its beauty and wisdom.

Wishing you a new week full of blessings!

  • Hey, Mary!

Many, many thanks for sharing your views about gardening! I still remember the plants you've shared in my writing challenge. I hope all of your plants are doing well especially the Spanish lavender. It is true though, gardening is therapeutic. There's something mesmerizing whenever we see them growing and blooming. I bet you get excited too when you managed to see a new sprout or bloom after you've been taking care of them for quite some time.

May your plants continue to provide you with happiness and mindfulness!

  • Hello, Eva!

Thank you so much for the encouraging comment! You're quite right! Gardening calms the soul as what Eman wrote here. I like the term 'mindfulness'. It is nice to pair it with tea break! Aside from that, there's always something new to learn with gardening. With more than 400,000 plant species around the globe, I don't think we would ever get bored... :)

By the way, bonsai plants are lovely too! I don't have one in my place but I've seen some tutorials on YouTube on how to make one. It looks really challenging and a bit elbow grease when making the right angle and form for the young tree. I hope one day you'll consider keeping some plants in your home.

Wishing you a lovely new week!

  • Lovely blog dear Robbie!

I love gardening too. I am getting ready for this year's Spring now.

Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as paint and the soil and the sky as canvas!

    Thanks for sharing!

    Well Done!

  • I totally agree: for some reason, gardening gives a kind of 'peace of mind'... it's like meditation. I realized this happend to me just by chance, noticing that every time i was taking care of my plants, watering them, etc, it made me feel more calm and relaxed. I don't know why it happens, but as you say, it's a real stress reliever.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Robbie,

I like your confession and what a lovely addiction you have, it is right gardening almost works like mindfulness, it can have a calming and de-stressing effect.

And I think those who really get interested in gardening, often it almost becomes like a personal competition for them, to see their plants grow well and fine.

I like bonsai trees, they are beautiful and fascinating, though I do not have green fingers.

What a lovely, positive and enthusiastic post. Good to see, Robbie :)

  • Hi, Eman!

Welcome to MyEC! Thank you for sharing your story! Oh my, being patient is the number one attitude we must possess as gardener. I hope as you get older you would develop more positive traits especially in taking care of your plants. Your dad seemed really passionate about gardening since he was able to manage hundreds of plants. Surely, it's calming to both body and soul.

Mango trees are common in my country as well. I love harvesting its fruit whenever I visit my grandma's property. When there are lots of ripe mangoes, I use them to bake a mango cake!

Wishing you would be able to start having a garden again! Be optimistic!

  • Hello, Bet!

That's wonderful! It's true and fascinating at the same time when you notice the way our plants respond to our caring ways. It's funny though I consider mine as my babies (the ornamental ones) he he especially when I grow them from the start until it matures.

I appreciate your suggestion to Rosemary. She can choose plants that thrive indoors such as golden pothos or spathiphyllum/peace lily. Actually there are many to choose from as long as we have enough information (light, water and humidity requirements) about indoor plants and if they are common in our area.

Thank you very much for your comment! I wish your plants grow prolifically!

  • Howdy, Roman!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about gardening. You're totally right. Gardening must be an enjoyable activity for someone or else it wouldn't prosper and even end up stressful. There are times that you wouldn't notice the time when you're involved with this hobby. It only means you're enjoying it plus the physical effort you could exert and you end up fitter and in tiptop shape he he.

It would be pleasing to know you're gardening ideas, Roman. I wonder what usually grows in Ukraine...

    Have a marvelous weekend!

  • Hey, Paula!
