Where do you eat?

In general, people of my country like to cook/prepare their three times meals, main food, everyday or in some cases they are  just bound to do it! Okay, whatever it is, I can say, they love their home made food. Then, how about working people, specially working women?

Here cooking responsibility mostly goes to females whether she stays at home , I mean home managers or  working women, no mercy!

Well, it is also true generally working women have at least one staff at their homes otherwise how it is possible to cook at least three times everyday. But, all working women can not effort it, you may understand!

Till now, it is uncommon to see, working people are eating  outside regularly on their way back to homes. Instead many of them like to get their home made food with them in their work places for lunch. And, of course, they  have breakfast and dinner at homes.

people like to eat out occasionally whether it is in a bit costly restaurant  or so called fast food. Though, having food in restaurants or having store bought food has become popular than before. But, most of the people specially general or so called middle class people are not in that group.

So, I would like to ask you what is the scenery of your country? do you like to have home made cooked food or frequently you dine out?

  • Thanks, Tanya.

Rose, nice to hear from you. Really is ready made food or store bought food worse there too?

  • Dear Bet, anything personal, I meant the things in gerenal and I am happy to hear your men change to the better

  • Dear estanis and nomi thanks for your comments ....
Dear, tanya,I did not tell that my man does not help me...hihi...he is always helpful....even sometimes he cook for us,makes tea but not every day. And, I also do cooking rarely...we have one who cooks for us every day. But,it is not usual scenery, till now we do believe housekeeping is for females...but I can say situation is changing.now some men give their hands in household works.
  • Bet, it is very sad to hear your men don't share your home duties with you. It is really different here. We don't even ask them to do it, they just know they should. Perhaps, you know we have two employees, a woman and a young man, and we don't need to do anything ourselves. But my man takes out the trash every evening, he walks our dog, he vacuumes our home office as we don't want our housekeeper to make order there and he makes me coffee and serves it to my bed every morning. And I tell you, he is not an exception. Both my nieces are married to the Ukrainian men and both men take very active part in clearing (it is out of the question at all) and cooking. One of them often askes me to tell him some of my recipes to gladden his wife. I know, it may sound somehow offensive, but it is how we live here.

  • Nothing is more delicious than a food that you have cooked by yourself, even if it tastes like shit to others. So I would prefer eating at home to dining outside.

However, at times, more or less, you should dine outside just to remind yourself that the shity food on which you have wasted your money tastes delicious to someone who has cooked it.
  • Yes... there's nothing like homemade food, at least you know all the ingredients you're eating haha...
As for your question, it's difficult to generalise here. It depends on everyone's lifestyle so I'll just answer my case; we live four at home but rarely or never we have lunch all together on the weekdays since every one has his/her own schedule, that was something unthinkable in my grandparents' times because it was sort of sacred to join all the family to have lunch :D

As for dinners I'm normally the person in charge to make them and they usually are light and not very formal. Many weekends we don't have dinner at home since we like going out for 'tapas' in the evening (that's still sacred hehe) or have lunch in any restaurant, I don't love it but it's also part of my job.
It deserves a mention too that meals here are later than in the rest of the countries or at least all the ones I've visited either Europe or the rest of the world but, as we say here, 'Spain's different ' :D
  • Thanks a lot, tanya...to fill me with your information. Yes, till now here housekeeping is women,s responsibility...mostly....here if husbands help a little then those women must be treated as lucky.
  • Dear Bet, as I was a working woman all my life (I quitted only 2 weeks ago), this topic is very exciting for me. But I quitted working not to spend the rest of my life in the kitchen! To cook three times a day! You must be kidding! I can tell you about two cultures, Ukrainian and American.

Americans are used to eat out. There are a lot of places where you can get tasty cheap meals. Most of families have breakfast at home, but it is something very easy like fried/scrumbled eggs, sandwiches. I don't have breakfast at all and my husband may have a sandwich with ham or cheese. To have dinner at home is like a holiday. It is mostly something romantic when a couple wants to be alone. Most of couples cook such dinner together serving it in some romantic way with flowers and candle lights. So, Americans don't like spending time cooking.

Everything is different in Ukraine. People prefer home-made meals, but nobody cooks three times a day or even every day. If both work, meals is cooked 2-3 times a week and nothing happens with it in the fridge. Like in your country, many Ukrainians bring home-made meals to work although many companies don't approve it now. But people don't care as no one can forbid you to eat what you like and Ukrainians are poor, they can't eat out every day. Some companies provide for a discount like Luci said, but it is not 50% discount. It is much less.

To sum it up somehow, I will say that we both aren't working now but we have no desire to cook at least once a day. And it is really humiliating when  men think it is women who should do everything about housekeeping. If they live together with us, they should share all our responsibilities

  • Thanks, dear Muskan. happy to know that now you can buy your lunch and dinner. it is really necessary when we are busy. If I think about a short distance around me, I can buy but most of the so called restaurant will not be a good choice due to cleanness that's why I will not buy and if I want standard food,  I have to pay more. So, it is true, we have problem buying daily meal and that is why we have to cook at home. Thanks again!

  • Hi Bet,

I noticed same thing even I was doing same when I was working. I noticed reason is in old days there were really few restaurants and they were not cheap to go everyday. People went there on special occasions. But now I can easily find a cheap take away place which does not provide me a very special gourmet food but a simple lunch type pack and most important in a cheap price. So why to spend time in buying grocery and chopping vegetables if you are tired already. I don't eat much out now as I am just studying but during peak days like exams I eat a uni campus cause they have good take away places at good price.
