what my 5-6 kids should know in

I always wonder what my two sons should learn in kinder garden to be able to attend the first grade with an enough amount of knowledge and skills.

Not all kinder gardens care about what their students gain by the final term and what skills should they get .. So, I preferred to search on the net to know what I should teach my kids in home as homeschooling in additional to their kinder gardens lessons.

I found that by the end of the year, my kids should learn :

  • Cut along a line with scissors.
  • Establish left- or right-hand dominance.
  • Understand time concepts like yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
  • Know the eight basic colors: red, yellow, blue, green, orange, black, white, and pink.
  • Recognize and write the letters of the alphabet in both language, (mother language and English) in upper- and lowercase forms.
  • Know the relationship between letters and the sounds they make.
  • Recognize sight words and read simple sentences.
  • Spell his first and last name.
  • Retell a story that has been read aloud.
  • Show an opinion through drawing, writing, or speaking (e.g. “My favorite book is…”)
  • Identify and be able to write numbers from 0 to 20.
  • Count by ones and tens to 100.
  • Do addition problems with sums up to 10.
  • Do subtraction problems with numbers 0 to 10.
  • Know basic shapes such as square, triangle, rectangle, and circle.
  • Know their address and phone number.

Now, I am so happy because both of my sons know all of these skills by my activities to them in all weekends, but what I have taught them more:

  • Count and write (Arabic) numbers from 20 to 0 in descending order
  • Write the missing letters in (Arabic) words.
  • Solve mazes and jigsaws
  • Write the previous number to any number I give to them.
  • Join and separate letters of words (in Arabic).
  • Give the English meaning of more than 50 Arabic words.
  • Put on and take off their clothes by themselves.
  • Clean up their bedroom toys.
  • Go out alone to buy something (in the neighborhood).

Finally, may you advise me about some more skills that my kids should know and learn, and I didn't mentioned them above ??!!

  • Hi! Don't forget the most important thing in the life of a kid, it's play!  For us adults work is our life but for kids it's play.  Allow them always this time because this is where they learn to build teamwork, acquire skills in socializing and making friends, being a leader or a follower.  This is where they are challenged to do tasks they might not do inside the classroom because it is done in a play setting so they think it's fun! Make room for a lot of spontaneous learning outside the classroom, like when travelling to school, point out common street signs they see everyday and explain it to them, next time you'll be surprised they will be the ones to remind you of it!  Don't forget to let them have fun while learning! Good luck:)

  • It sounds like you have given them a great head start for school.
  • Sounds like you have covered everything, but I guess I'm not the expert in all things about children since I don't have any. :D :D
