What do you think about modifying human genes?

A Chinese scientist is being criticised for making twin girls whose genes were modified. He seems to have modified the girls' genes when they were ova, so that they wouldn't contract AIDS, because their father had AIDS.

Most scientists around the world criticise him because they think it is unethical to modify human genes. If they allow it, they can design people as they like. It would be very terrible, wouldn't it?

There are some problems about this case. For instance, how about the girls' human rights? The girls will be an object of study. They will be observed throughout their lives. How about their health? We can't know what will happen to the girls because they are the first humans whose genes were modified. Are they allowed to have babies? If they have babies, of course, their babies will have the same problems as they have. What do you think about modifying human genes?

  • Hi, Hardi. Thank you for sharing your experience. :D

  • :D No, I can't shoot the thread from my hands. Although I have the organs to create the thread, I can't control it. Can't control also the mix of substance the threads are formed. Real spiders can shoot different kind of thread.. more sticky stuff to wrap their victims and..
Also I would shoot it out spontaneously when get irritated, or having bad dream. So I take the medicine.. There's a medicine developed specially for me, that suppress it.. When I was teenage, it was especially bad, because hormones level change. Medicine didn't work properly, then. I was shooting the "threads" out while sleeping and then by morning all the room was a mess, I myself was wrapped to sticky "cocoon".. well it was really not a cocoon. Because of the bad mix, the threads didn't form properly.. And I could get free from it.. I was worried that I might suffocate though.. So I'm kinda a failure experiment, but still valuable, because the scientists learned something.. so the medicine to suppress those organs I get free, because they can study me...

  • Hi, Hardi. Of course, I know about Spiderman. Did your parents add spider's genes into your genes? If so, you are the real spiderman. Can you give off thread from your hands?

As for your children, they will have a special ability because of having your and your wife's genes, who is invisiblewoman. Of course, your wife should bear her children secretly because the government will surely use them.

  • I have modified genes. My parents, were big fans of some comic characters from past.. Spiderman. Have you heard about him? Now I'm already 75 years old and we have discussed it with my wife and now we want to try to have children. Do we have to bay copy right fee to both, patent holder of our genes.. and the creator of the comic characters? My wife is Invisiblewoman.
Though, I don't understand somethings. When my body cells multiply all the time.. I don't know how many new cells are made each day, but there's probably a lot. They contain the patented gene too, but I don't have to bay to those greedy lawyers who became holders of my genes copy right last year.. But if I want to have children(natural way, without gene manipulation) I need to buy second license. Is it like user based then? That my children will become like other user of same gene and then he has to buy new license? It's so expensive. I'm very disappointing and frustrated.

We also have to get permission from government, because my wife's gene belongs to government, she's Invisiblegirl. 52% of her body is military property, by contract that her parents did with government.. Getting pregnant without permission would be violation of national property.
She might need to bay rent for to government to carry child.. because of the law.. Or I don't know, I don't trust that lawyer. He just sweet talks us and try to get more money...

What will happen, if I make some children without permission/license. Will they execute them, if they find out, or will they take them away from us?

  • Hello, Fran. Thank you for sharing your view. A few days ago, we knew human genes was modified by a scientist for the first time. A good thing is that it may be useful for healing genetic illnesses. Bad things are what I said in this blog. We need to discuss this.

  • Hello, Saba. Thank you for your opinion.

  • I agree with it if modifying genes is for good purposes, for example, to avoid incurable diseases.
  • Hi, Onee-chan. Thank you for your comment. Transplanting head, yes, that's right. The head and the body may fight each other over the initiative. :D

  • Hi, Bet. Thank you for sharing your view. Yes, genetically modified agriculture are sold, but I don't eat them. I am not sure that they are safe for us.
