All English learners would like to speak English well. They are excited at the idea of being able to communicate in English fluently. However, they usually don’t care about the learning process itself. For most learners, learning English is a duty — something that they have to, but don’t want to do. They don’t see pleasure in learning English.

In short, most learners would like to speak English well but don’t like to be learning English. This is the first and biggest problem facing an English learner, because a person who doesn’t like to learn English will not learn it well. If you don’t love English, English won’t love you back!

If you want to become a successful learner, you need to like the learning process itself. You need to treat time spent on English as time for pleasure and relaxation. For example, you need to enjoy:

  • reading English sentences and thinking about their structure
  • learning new words from a dictionary
  • writing a correct English sentence by consulting dictionaries, grammar guides, and the Web
  • practicing the pronunciation of English sounds and words

Now think and tell us about ur difficulties ??

  • First of all, lack of vocabularies and expression. It prevent me to express myself in English, but even with a lot of vocab I am not good at describing things or state :)

Second, grammar. I only had English lesson from school and it was not enough. But even it was enough, I don't think I will be able to remember all the grammar lesson. ^^

  • Hi Sweety,

In my case this process looks a bit different: learning languages is my hobby, so I really enjoy the learning process starting from zero and comparing the specificities of the language I'm learning with another languages' ones etc. The same thing happens to me also now, while learning English. And I think, it would be more helpful to have any inspiring Goal, depending on ones interests, which would make the learning become rather a pleasure than just a must.

But you know, my biggest problem in learning English (and other languages too) is LISTENING, so that sometimes I wonder if I have to check my ears maybe? LOL! However, I think that more or less, it's caused by lack of opportunity to hear the language you are learning as much as you need to hear. :))))

  • hi, Sweety

no learning, no success, u're right, going up to the top is easy when making efforts.

    thanks

  • Hi Sweety,

I like this blog and agree with you about what it takes to learn English well.  As a teacher, I see students who do as you suggest and advance quickly.  There are others who would like to know English, but are not willing to work at learning.

I think we all would like to be able to learn while we sleep or maybe take a language pill that would make us instantly fluent in another language.  I think "The Matrix" movie is the only place where people can learn things instantly.  It would be nice!

  • In talking with lots of English learners, I find that those who continue to work at ALL 4 aspects, reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and work at them with people who can provide educated feedback, are the most successful.  It's not easy, but I think it can be fun with the right attitude and a sense of humor! The reading is not as useful unless you also try producing writing, that is when you learn what you don't understand! And the listening can improve using Skype, listening to podcasts and other digital recordings, and listening to TV and news shows, but it doesn't go far enough without also attempting the speaking.

One other thing I would say. When posting writing or speaking to others, it is a good idea to remind the readers/listeners to give you back some critical comment! Otherwise sometimes people are shy to criticize and you don't get the feedback you really need.

  • There are no difficulties at all if you know how to learn and especially if you have a desire to learn :)

  • i agree with you that we want to accelerate in talking english fluently but without exerting a lot of efforts or even loving what we have to do . i think the most important thing in learning any new language that we have to be armed with self confidence and not feeling any kind of embarassement  when we make mistakes

  • yes dear Anele it's the problem of majority of us, the solution is to speak it with ur self in from of the miror ... every where to make it better, for me I have a lot of friends, sometimes I practise it with them via skype.
