  • Dear Mr  Khaliqur Rahman,

Thank you for demonstrating the occurence of the inconsistency in the relationship between spelling and pronunciation in English with your ‘ough’ letter combination. Now, is it correct if I were to say that phonetic spellings could tell us the different sound values of a particular letter or letter combination

The following is the sentence that you used in your voice recording. I’ve given the pronunciation spelling of all the words with ‘ough’ letter combination in them. I Hope this will further help our EC members get a clear picture of the message that you're trying to convey! Thanks once again, Sir!

"I thought it would be rough to plough through the slough, though it was falling into the lough that left me thoroughly coughing and hiccoughing."

         ough is /ɔ:/..in thought /θɔ:t/

         ough is /ʌf/..in rough..../rʌf/

         ough is // in plough.../pl/

ough is /u:/ in through /θru:/

         ough is // in slough.../sl/

         ough is /əʊ/ in though..əʊ/

         ough is /ɒk/.in lough..../lɒk/

         ough is /ʌ/...in throroughly /ˈθʌrəli/

         ough is /ɒf/..in coughing    ./ˈkɒfɪŋ/

         ough is /ʌp/.in hiccoughing /ˈhɪkʌpɪŋ/
