The Hispter

Enna is what people in her country call a ‘hipster’. She always wants to be the first person to be up to date with the pulse of modern lifestyle. She wants to be the first to post a new opening of café or shops. She wants to be the first person to share the ‘in trend’ news in her Facebook feed. She likes to be seen patronising stylish café of which a cup of coffee is 3 – 4 times more expensive than a simple cup of coffee in a shop.

She likes to portray herself as to be up to quality as famous local celebrities. However Enna is not from a well to do family. She is just working as a Sales Executive in a local company. Thus, in order for her to be seen as to be up to the mark, she is using a lot of credit cards.

She is maximising the credit limit of her credit cards to feed her obsession to be seen as a cool and hipster woman. Now she is up to her neck with debt. One by one, her credit card is being blocked and the banks are chasing her for payment. She can’t focus on her work because she is up to high doh with worry on how to repay her debts.

She is so worried that she contacted her ex-boyfriend, Johan and told him her predicament, though she knew that Johan is of unsavoury character and always up to no good in his business dealings. She knew Johan will come up with something to help her. However she was unprepared when Johan called her a week later and lay out the plan for her to pay off her debts. She never knew Johan could concoct such devious scheme. Now she is pinned between a rock and a hard place, and she feels hapless.

  • Thank you for the compliment Seeker. I really appreciate it.

  • Adaline Bala, thank you for reading. I really appreciate it.

  • Mizan, people should only spend based on their abilities. Unfortunately, some people, especially the younger generations, like to be in trend that they don't mind living in debt.

  • Evangelina, maybe it's the peril of social medias. People are trying to imitate each other as well as celebrities. Unfortunately most of them are still young. With not so secure financial resources yet.

Bank is banking on this obsession by these young people to make business. Over here, some bank will give some people who just graduated and on their first job a credit card. No question ask. They won't even check your credit abilities. Banks are desperate.

Then these young people will ended up with lots of debt and will take up on to pay off the debt. The vicious cycle will start.

I guess they are too young to look far ahead and think of the consequences.

  • It took me time to read Enna' story, since you made me look up several unknown words to me hehe...
Now I wonder if she's a real girl, anyway there are lot of Ennas everywhere, ah! and what's the matter to women with handbags? Once I argued with my own 'Enna' because my tiny places to keep my clothes are reducing every time she buys a new handbag.
  • Hi Danny. I know the word 'hipster' means different thing over there. Unfortunately or fortunately, we Malaysians like to malign certain words and use them for describing totally different thing. Thus, the word 'hipster' in this story is totally for Malaysian term. It means a young man/woman that always in trend and flaunting them in the social medias.

I'm looking forward for the corrections, and thank you in advance. I really appreciate it.
