Passive Voice with Two Objects

Hello everyone! :)

Have you ever been confused about passive voice when you found two objects in active sentence??

To remember about Passive Voice structure and examples, visit here.

Now let's look at this example!

  • Active Voice: She gave her son some money.
  • Passive Voice: Her son was given some money.

In active voice, 'her son' is indirect object, and 'some money' is direct object. In passive voice, the indirect object 'her son' becomes the subject.

Now another example...

  • Active Voice: She gave some money to her son.
  • Passive voice: Some money was given to her son.

In active voice, 'some money' is direct object, and 'her son' is indirect object. In passive voice, the direct object becomes the subject.

So, the rule is .... "USE OBJECT THAT APPEARS FIRST IN ACTIVE SENTENCE". You can omit the subject of active voice OR you can put it at the end sentence of passive.

There are some verbs usually used in passive with two objects. They are give, teach, tell, show, send, offer, lend.

What about these examples of active voices? How to change them into passive? I'm looking forward to your response. :)

  1. Mr. Ryan teaches me English.
  2. Mrs. Riana sent the children a bouquet of flowers.
  3. He is offering her a drink.
  4. They can show you the way to the hospital.
  5. She will tell a secret to me.
  6. Father lent some money to Ferdy.
  7. They will show their best performance to us.
  8. He has sent the best gift to me.

Have a great day! ^_^

    5. A secret will be told to me by her
    6. Some money wil be lent to Ferdy by father.
    7. Their best performance will be shown to us

  • Hello Sunho,

Thank you very much for your response.

I forgot to write that 'by .....' can be omitted depends on how important they are. :)))

As the rule I wrote above, the second would be correct. "A secret will be told to me "

    Good day!

  • LOL, Rys...

Thanks a lot for your guidance and every detail. Hmm.... I'm still confused about the object that should be a subject in passive. I found it is ON DEBATE, but some rules say it uses the object that appears first.

Surely not, it enrich my knowledge.

I'm sorry for my belated response. I was sinking in other world, :D.

  • Hi Malal Jalloh,

So nice to meet you. I'm sorry for my belated reply. ^^

This is from my own observation that 'we use object that appears first in active sentence', probably especially when changing it in exam. :D

I wish the other type for number 2, 3, and 4. You can see the first sentences of the answers from Rys.

But all your sentences are correct. It's great to see you here. Thank you.
    Good day! :)

  • I will do ony one question. Sorry. I don't have time.

    5. I will be told a secret by her. OR A secret will be told to me by her.

  • Oi there,

Here is my humble try - I'll put the given sentences in passive voice for both objectives, where possible:

1 -  I am taught English by Rayan.  Here "English" as passibe subject would sound awkward.

2 - The children were sent a bouquete of flowers  - A bouquet of flowers was sent to the children by Mrs Raina.

3- She is being offered a drink. - A drink is offered to her by him.

4 - You can be shown the way to the hospital by them. The way to the hospital can be shown to you by them.

5 - A secret will be told to me. I will be told a secret by her.

6 - Some money was sent to Ferdy. Ferdy was sent some money by father -> this construction is awkward and should be avoided.

7 - Their best performance will be shown to us. We will be shown their best performance...here we should not indicate "by whom" as it is indicated by "their performance".

8 - The best gift has been sent to me. -  I have been sent the best gift. Here "who sent it" is needless.

LOL...hope I did not go astray...

  • Dear onee, I will try it and then tell me the mistakes I will make.
