Ode to Joy : Beethoven

Ode to Joy : Beethoven
O friends, no more these sounds!
Let us sing more cheerful songs,
more full of joy!
Joy, bright spark of divinity,
Daughter of Elysium,
Fire-inspired we tread
Thy sanctuary.
Thy magic power re-unites
All that custom has divided,
All men become brothers
Under the sway of thy gentle wings.
Whoever has created
An abiding friendship,
Or has won
A true and loving wife,
All who can call at least one soul theirs,
Join in our song of praise;
But any who cannot must creep tearfully
Away from our circle.
All creatures drink of joy
At nature's breast.
Just and unjust
Alike taste of her gift;
She gave us kisses and the fruit of the vine,
A tried friend to the end.
Even the worm can feel contentment,
And the cherub stands before God!
Gladly, like the heavenly bodies
Which He set on their courses
Through the splendor of the firmament;
Thus, brothers, you should run your race,
As a hero going to conquest.
You millions, I embrace you.
This kiss is for all the world!
Brothers, above the starry canopy
There must dwell a loving Father.
Do you fall in worship, you millions?
World, do you know your creator?
Seek him in the heavens;
Above the stars must He dwell.

  • I'm not into poems, and especially this kind I don't like. Neither Schiller's nor Beethoven's version. But I love Beethoven's compositions, and most people who start learning playing the piano will have learned an easy version of this part. And so did I, it's a lot of fun!!
    But my favorite composition of his is Moonlight Sonata 3rd Movement.

    And here a link for the guitar players. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZuSaudKc68 XD Okay, not many will like this. But I do. :-D
    • Wow. Wonderful. When I was a teenager, I used to get goosebumps listening Für Elise.

      So you are pianist? Nice. Have you listened the following-

    • Gosh, I'm not a pianist. I'm just someone who plays the piano for relaxation and to free the mind. I'm an autodidact, so please don't expect mastery from me. XD I love to improvise when I feel down or stressed out, and after an hour I feel new-born and happy again.  ;-)

      Yeah, I know all of those musical pieces. Claude Debussy is one of my favorite composers as well. :)

    • I misunderstood you for a pianist. Apologies. That's very impressive.

    • And here a piece of another deeply loved composer...

  • Dear Manoj, I don't know whether poets are writing the Odes in this way nowadays. One of my favourite Odes is Ode to West Wind. Writing poem is a very hard work, I myself yet to try it.

    With very best wishes

    • This one is dearest to me. Beethoven composed it when he had became deaf. So the guy never heard his own composition.

      You are about writing poems. Many will say it's easy but when it comes to creating master piece like only few will be able to pull off.

    • Thanks. Glad to get the info.

  • Sher schön !.. I am going to subscribe to your page..!(Ludwig van Beethoven)

    • *wunderschön

      Haha. I will be happy.
