My TOP-3 sci-fi books in English.

Yesterday it was a World Book Day. Books make our life more interesting, learn us and bring our souls to new places, worlds and situations.

A long time ago I found that sci-fi books were the best way to start reading in English. Sci-fi authors usually use quite understandable language, good sci-fi books are full of new ideas and you read them not "for learning", but for pleasure. So, here are my TOP-3 books you can read in English:

1. "READY PLAYER ONE" by Ernest Cline. Obviously, you have already heard somewhere this title. Maybe, you have already watched the movie, made by Steven Spielberg. But if even so, you must read it. If you like culture of 80`s and 90`s, you like movies and games, and from time to time you want to become a teenager again - stop reading this post and download "Ready Player One" on your device.

2. "SLEEPING GIANTS" by Sylvian Neuvel. This is more "mature" reading. Sylvian Neuvel decided to write a book in two genres: science fiction and a political thriller. Much less action than in the previous book, but still very interesting. Secret technologies, aliens, politicians...

3. "OLD MAN`S WAR" by John Scalzi. If I am not mistaken, it was the first book in English I have ever read. Space ships, hostile planets, angry aliens and interstellar wars, humor - you can find here everything you need. John Scalzi is an author that never get a Pulitzer Prise, but still some of his books are really worth reading.

This is not my  TOP-3 sci-fi books at all - some of my favorites sometimes difficult to read even in my native language, but the list above includes books, that are easy to read and have fun for non-native speakers of English.

If you have some favorite books in English - please, share your list in comments!

  • I have just realised that I use the word "cool" as often, as Mr. Trump says "fantastic". )))

  • Rose Iris Will, I wish you to get a message about availability as soon as possible, because the app is really cool. )
  • Yes, exactly, Alex. So I understood the message of them. In the message was written, if I gave them my contact data, they would inform me if it's available also for Germany.

  • Dear MARY, thank you for your list. I see, you are a fan of classics. ) In any case, if you decide to try something from "a new generation" of sci-fi authors - just let me know, I will be happy to recommend something cool. )

Nowadays really successful sci-fi books are written not by "professional writers", but by "professional scientists" - quantum physicists, astronomers and so on... That`s why it is a huge pleasure to read them. But, IMHO, such books should be read in a native language, English can be too complicated. )

  • Rose Iris Will, really, what a pity! I thought that it was only in Ukraine that a lot of apps are not available. ) But, Germany too..

But I may know the reason. As far as I know, Storytel was made by a Russian company - several months ago they have audiobooks only in Russian and only a few months ago they added a huge library of audiobooks in English. I think, they just need some time to open the access for all countries.

  • I dunno any of these books, but I'm not really fond of sci-fi stories.
I've read very few books of that genre, but here are some I can remember right now and I suggest:

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams (sci-fiction & comedy. Hilarious and awesome classic)

Brave New World (Aldous Huxley. Another classic)

Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury. And another awesome classic)

And I'm still trying to finish 1984 by George Orwell (shame on me)

There are many other sci-fi authors I'd like to read, such as H.G Wells, Kurt Vonnegut, Jules Verne, Philip K. Dick... so many books, so little time.

About my "favorite books" erm, well... it could be an endless list.

I like blogs about books; thanks for sharing.

  • Hi Alex, I was looking for "Storytel". Unfortunately, it isn't available in Germany.

When I choose my country, I get the message :

Unfortunately, Storytel has not yet reached your country, but fill out your e-mail address to get updates on news about us and find out when we get to your country.

What a pity! But thanks so much for your tip.

  • Thanks a lot, Alex, I'll have a look.

  • Ohh, I like listening to audiobooks in English too! To tell the truth, firstly I read "Ready Player One" and then listened to it! ) I can recommend you a good source too - an app "Storytel" - they have 50.000+ audibooks in English. Some of them are read by really wonderful actors. If you have time and desire - try it. Convenient and interesting.

  • Ohhh...noooo...it isn't.

Many interesting books are published on Youtube and you can read and listen at the same time.

I listen to the reader with closed eyes. If I don't understand something, I interrupt the record and read the passage.
You can find the books divided into Levels from beginner to advanced.

Just search for: learn English through story level.
