Just for Fun!

Hello, my dearest EC members!

We learned the difference between the indefinite articles, i.e ‘a’ and ‘an’ and the correct usage of them when we were still in elementary school. Here’s a little test for you!  What  indefinite  article  do  you  use  when  you  name  each of the 26 letters of the alphabet?

.

~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~:~*~

.

Fill in the blanks with a’ or ‘an’. Can you score 26 out of 26?

   This is ___ A.            That is __ B.          There is __ C.              It is __ D.

  Show me __ E.         Give me __ F.         Buy me __ G.        Throw me __ H.

   Engrave __ I.      Sandblast __ J.       Emboss __ K.        Chisel __ L.

     Make __ M.          Form __ N.             Display __ O.            Create __ P.

    Delete __ Q.              Erase __ R.                Drop __ S.               Cross __ T

     Bend __ U.               Twist __ V.                  Fix __ W.                Hang __ X.

.                            .

.                              .Hide __ Y.            Bury __ Z.

Note:
Type your answers in full sentences in the comment box.

[You could also add your voice recording later if you want to!]

Did you know?
The indefinite articles ‘a’ and ‘an’ mean the same thing, i.e. ‘one’.

Example:   a mango    =   one mango

               ..an apple    =   one apple

Since both articles denote one noun, why do we need two different articles to do the same job instead of only one?  Have you ever asked yourself this question? Do you know the answer? Could someone tell us what it is?

PS. I have changed my blog setting to ‘wait for my approval’ mode! This will prevent one from looking at the answers that are already posted by the previous participants. Sorry for the inconvenience, guys!

  • Hi, Gabriel!

The use of the correct form of the indefinite article a  or  an  is rather challenging! So I'd like to remind our member some rules, as many of them use the wrong form of it in their blogs.

    We use  'a'  with nouns starting with a consonant  ( b, d, s t, p....).

We use  'an' with nouns starting with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u)

            A boy

            An apple

             A car

            An orange

            A house

            An opera

    NOTE:
An            before an h mute - an hour, an honour.
A before u and eu when they sound like 'you':           a european, a university, a unit

So, practising with letters of the alphabet is a good way to remember the use of the right form of the indefinite article.

You can start your answer like this:

    This is an A.

That is a B.     and so on...

It's fun and at the same time useful! Just try!

P.S. Gabriel, by the way, the design of the blog is fantastic! When I opened it, I say 'WOW!' The colours are so unusual and bright! And the song "ABC" is very beautiful! Thanks for giving us joy with your creative work!

    Galina,

Wow! You are also the first to post the answers. Thank you so much for your participation. As I have set the blog to ‘wait for my approval’ mode, the others can’t see your answers at the moment. This is simply to preclude one from the temptation of looking at the answers of the previous participants. I hope more will take part in this simple and easy activity. Thanks again, dear!

  • Hi, Gabriel!

It's one more educational blog! Now it concerns both grammar and phonetics! It's great to revise the use of two kinds of indefinite article a/ an. We use 'a'  with nouns starting with a consonant sound  and  'an' with nouns starting with a vowel  sound.

    NOTE:
An            before an h mute - an hour, an honour.
A before u and eu when they sound like 'you':           a european, a university, a unit

    This is an A

    That is a B

    There is a C

    It is a D

    Show me an E

    Give me an F

    Buy me a G

    Throw me an H

    Engrave an I

    Sandblast a J

    Emboss a K

    Chisel an L

    Make an M

    Form an N

    Display an O

    Create a P

    Delete a Q

    Erase an R

    Drop an S

    Cross a T

    Bend a U

    Twist a V

    Fix a W

    Hang an X

    Hide a Y

    Bury a Z ( poor Z!)

By the way, I've learnt some new verbs Thanks for this interesting and educationa game! It's fun!
