In The Classroom: The Universe

Topic: The Universe
Grammar Section: Indirect Question

TEACHER: OK, Class. Today, we will talk about the Universe. Can anyone tell me what you know about the Sun?

GAMA: It’s the nearest star to the Earth and also the center of our Solar System.

TEACHER: Good, Gama! That’s right. Now does anyone know how long it takes the Earth to revolve around the Sun?

FIKKRY: It takes three hundred sixty five and a quarter days.

TEACHER: Wow! Perfect, Fikkry! That’s why we have A LEAP YEAR every four years, and the leap day goes to . . . . ?

FIYA: February 29th.

TEACHER: Smart girl! Were any of you born on that day?

CICI: Me, Teacher. My father usually celebrates my birthday once per four years.

STUDENTS: Woaaahhhh…!!

TEACHER: It must be so special to you, Cici.

CICI: Sure. Thanks, Teacher.

~~~~~
TEACHER: Okay. Next question! Students, do you have any idea how the Earth can go around the Sun without being released from its orbit?
AGUNG: It is because the existence of the Sun’s gravity.
TEACHER: Correct! Can you explain more, Agung?
JANI: Let me do it, Teacher.
TEACHER: OK. Go ahead.
JANI: Every object in this universe moves. The lighter objects orbit the heavier one. The sun is 1000 times heavier than the largest planet, Jupiter. That’s why every planet, including the Earth, can go around the Sun consistently on its orbit.
TEACHER: Excellent, Jani! Now I’d like to know if any of you dream to be an astronaut or astronomer.
QISTH: Me, Teacher! I dream to be an astronaut and fly in outer space.
DANANG: Be careful you may not get back!!
STUDENTS: Aahaa..ha…ha…..! [ten seconds of laughter]
TEACHER: Awesome! You ought to make your dream come true, Qisth. Don’t give up!
QISTH: Thanks, Teacher.
TEACHER: Well, students. At this point, any questions?
HIDA: I wonder why the Earth is the only habitable planet.
TEACHER: Good question, Hida! I’ll explain that. The Earth is at the right distance from the Sun. It makes the right temperature for life. It is protected from harmful solar radiation by its magnetic field. It is kept warm by an insulating atmosphere, and it has the right chemical ingredients for life, including water and carbon. No other planets have all these features. It makes the Earth the only planet we can live on.
HANI: I heard that the scientists found some planets outside our solar system that look similar to our Earth. Do you think there is any life on those planets? Would it be possible for us to live there?
TEACHER: Thanks for the question, Hani. Yes, time to time scientists searched and found those planets. Just remember! There are billions and BILLIONS of stars in our Galaxy alone, and each star is supposed to have at least one planet. Thousand planets were found and some of them look similar to our beloved planet. The distance to the star (as the center of solar system), the size, and the elements of the planets are almost similar to our habitable planet. Yet, until today, they haven't found any evidence of life there. IF one day we EVEN find a habitable planet, we will get old or even die before reaching it. IF ONLY there were a vehicle moving as quickly as the light does, 300.000 km/second . . . Probably we can take a walk in our Galaxy.
AINUR: How long will it take us to reach the boundary of our solar system?
TEACHER: Good question, Ainur! Let me first ask you a question. Have you ever heard about Voyager 1?
STUDENTS: . . . . . . [shaking the head]
TEACHER: No body? OK. I will explain.
It is the spacecraft launched on September 5th, 1977. With the speed of about 17 km/second, it is the only spacecraft that reaches the farthest distance from the Earth, the boundaries of our solar system. Scientist said it needs at least 36 YEARS to reach the boundary of our solar system. Until today, this spacecraft has still been in communication with the Earth and is keeping on moving away from the Sun. Now can you imagine how long it will take you to reach a planet outside our Solar System? :D
ALDI: Let’s just go by Doraemon’s DOOR, Teacher.
STUDENTS: Haha…..ha……!
TEACHER: Good idea, Aldi! :)))
~~~~~

TEACHER: Well, dear students, you’re all amazing today. You must have read your book last night.

VIRA: Teacher......you have explained it so many times……. [LOL…….] *kidding

Thank you so much for reading my blog. The class is over. :D I wrote this just because of my interest in astronomy. Let me hear your any opinions about this. Do any of you learners know the direct question of the underlined sentences??? Who do you think is the smartest in this classroom??? :D :D Hey, this is not a test. ^^ Teachers or anyone who do know grammar better, please let me know my mistake. And MOST IMPORTANT, let me know if I gave you much headache. :D :D Thank you so much once again. Have a very nice day, all. ^_^

  • Hi, Onee!

    I am a little bit surprised by this your blog!

    It seems, you like astronomy!

    But let me ask a couple of questions :)

    1) I wonder, why only father celebrates CICI's birthday once per four years. Is he a lone father?

    2) Except planets similar to Earth, there are some some potentially habitable satellites. For example Jupiter's satellite "Europa" :P

    I think, the smartest in that classroom is Hugo. Because he is silent all the time. He knows even more than other students, but doesn't want to seem a nerd :D

    Thank you very much for sharing, Onee!

    Have a wonderful day! ^_^

  • Estanis,

    Glad that you didn't get a headache because of this. ^^

    I WAS NOT a teacher, I AM. :p Not actually, only in a course. ;) Half of the conversation was true. ^^

    No topic put up resistance?? What a word. :D Thanks a million. Btw, maybe because I teach many subjects. :D

    Thank you once again for your comment. :)

  • Hello Estanis, Coral, Luci, Elen, and Bdshab.....

    It's too long to reply. :D I tell you a secret,, just because I think I wrote a long and heavy blog, it's also heavy for me to reply. lol..... I will reply you one by one, please.. ^^

  • thank you onee for this lesson

  • Aewsome idea Onee, to present us this topic as a lesson in a class! I enjoyed it much, especially the jokes that kids did :D Adorable and smart kids ^_^ No, you didn't give me headache :D And I agree with others, the smartest kid seems to be Jani.

    I didn't know you like astronomy. Do you have telescope? :D It would be intersting to observe the sky through this.

    NASA wants to send people to Mars to live there. Many people made application for this. Oh my God... I don't know how they can do this. It wants too much courage but still I don't get why they decided to do this. Anyway, I guess life in Mars wouldn't be so interesting :D

  • I like it a lot and it proves how devoted fan of universe you are, Onee!! I dudn't know that much about Voyager and hahaaaa it is my fortunate year :D don't dare to count how old I am! :P thanx for your post and I like the way you wrote it - discussion between teacher and students is catchy! Thumbs up!
  • Hi Onee,

    I think all of your students are smart, but it seems that Jani is more curious than others. He has more information about the solar system.

    By the way, I'm very interested in scientific subjects and I really enjoyed reading your blog. It didn't give me a headache :)

  • You didn't give me any headache Onee, don't worry, I like these topics hehe...

    So, were you the teacher? I wouldn't have minded to be one of your students in this amusing class.
    I see there's no topic put up resistance to you :D
  • Dear Mishaikh,

    Thank you so much for appreciating my efforts on this topic.

    This is actually one of the subjects I teach. I usually talk about this but some are not in a school book. ^^

    Btw, what about my weird question? "Who do you think is the smartest in this classroom?" :D

    I'm glad that you visit my blog. ^^

  • Dear Seeker and Evangelina,,

    I'm sorry it took me long to reply your comment, I was just ..... overwhelmed. :D You really made my day, guys. If only I met you two, let me treat you a glass of juice, just juice, ok. LOL....

    What an amazing comment from my very good and hospitable friend, Seeker. ^_^

    I understand what you mean in the two first reasons. ^^

    The third reason, that's what I do with my students. Most of time, students should be active. That's how I got the inspiration to make this dialogue.

    Mistake? C'mon....You and Eva even didn't answer this weird question... "Who do you think is the smartest in this classroom?" :D *just kidding okay..... :p

    Eva, I just followed your idea.... :D and we are successful. *ops!! I mean Seeker read comments. *ops!! I mean Seeker is really a caring friend. Thank God. ^^ (honestly, I didn't know that this is your purpose...LOL...)

    Eva, I realized that this could be a little heavy topic as I wrote numbers and uncommon terms. See, the number of viewers is fair, but only few commented. ^^ It's okay. Maybe this really made people dizzy. :D :D

    So, thank you with lots of flowers, Seeker and Eva for liking this blog and joining this discussion. ^_^ :D

    No one ruins my blog. Otherwise, I feel so glad. Have a great week, Seeker and Eva! ^_^
