On the 7th of February the XXII Winter Olympic Games have started in Russia! Without any doubt  this international event means a lot for all Russian people. I think it’s a great opportunity to show Russian culture, Russian character and Russian hospitality to the whole world!  Besides it’s a great chance for all Russian people to unite and to be proud of their unique country.

As a teacher I could see some lack of patriotism a few years ago among young people because they were brought up in a new Russia unlike their parents. Besides we practically didn’t teach our students to be patriots. I always didn’t like it as I’m very much Russian and tried to inspire students to be proud of their country in spite of some negative aspects.

But now the situation has changed. On Saturday (February,8) I asked my students to share their  opinion about the Opening Ceremony which took place on Friday, 7. I was so pleased by their excitement, by their feeling of being proud of  Russia!!! At first we started to discuss everything concerning the Olympic Games in English but they were so excited that began to talk in Russian interrupting each other! They were so enthusiastic talking about it that I enjoyed greatly listening to them!

Now I’d like to share some photos to tell you and show you our attitude (simple Russian people) to this huge international event. Since the beginning of the school year we had been preparing for this grand event. My 12-year old students  prepared a project “ Sochi XXII Winter Olympic Games” in the form of electronic brochure (all 22 students were involved) where we tried to describe everything concerning the Games beginning with the ancient Olympic Games in Greece (776 BC). We presented our project to many other students of our school. After the presentation we asked the questions (a sort of quiz) and then we sang the anthem of our XXII Winter Olympic Games!

Also we were so eager to see and welcome the Olympic Torch Relay here in Saratov. You know that it was the most impressive relay in the history of Olympic Games! It will be remembered not only as the longest, but also as one of the most unusual events: during its trip through Russia ( 65.000 km), the Olympic torch rode a Russian troika, a reindeer sleigh and a camel, visited the North Pole, the international space station (even outer space), and dove to the bottom of Lake Baikal (the deepest in the world). Russian mountaineers lit the torch atop Mount Elbrus, at 5,642 meters  the highest mountain in Russia and Europe. The relay lasted for 123 days, 14.000 torchbearers were involved  including a 101-year-old man.

It was a very exciting and meaningful event that really united all Russian people who live far away from Moscow, from Sochi and from each other. On the 97th day January, 11 the torch arrived in Saratov! We were so happy! We were allowed not to go to school and most of my students and their parents came to school and after some preparation we went to watch this fabulous event! Fortunately our school is situated 5 min walk from the main square where the final part of the ceremony was held. We had a chance to feel the spirit of the Olympic Games!

Here we’re at school blowing up the balloons and doing some other preparations:

Then on the 22nd of January one of the torchbearers (my  student’s mother) came to our school to tell our students about the relay, its atmosphere, its uniqueness.

We had a great chance to see and touch the torch! Everybody was so excited!

The Olympic torch is red, the traditional color of Russian sport. Its form reminds of the feather of the magic bird, which is said to bring good fortune and happiness. Everyone in Russia knows this fairy-tale about the Firebird, or the Phoenix which rose from the ashes. The body of the torch is made of aluminum. The color is light-silver "chrome".  The torch weighs nearly 1.8 kg, is 0.95 m tall and 54 mm wide. Its weight and center of gravity were carefully calculated so as to make the torch as comfortable as possible to carry whilst running.

We also admired the Olympic clothes of the torchbearer. It’s so bright, so colourful! The ideas of the Russian patchwork quilt were used while designing the olympic clothes. We can see the patterns from 28 different traditional arts across the country on them symbolizing that Russia is a multinational and multicultural country.

The brightly coloured diamond design is seen everywhere at the Sochi Games, on banners, clothing, cars, trains and even the athletes’ medals, which feature a monochrome quilt segment.

The torchbearer kindly allowed me to try on these magic clothes and to hold the torch! It’s an unforgettable experience! I was so happy!

The slogan of the XXII Winter Olympic Games is “Hot. Cool. Yours!” I think everyone in the world will enjoy watching this superb international event!

Dear Josef Essberger and Tara Benwell, thank you very much for the excellent material on the Sochi Winter Olympic Games , given here on EC. I downloaded it, printed and gave my students to discuss the topic. Tara, I also used your voice recording "Figure Skaters Do Get Dizzy". We listened to it at the lessons and discussed. • Hi, Stranger!

Thanks for the nice comment! It was really a great event! Now remembering that time I understand how happy we were then. And it was only a year ago!!! It seems it was in our past life long time ago. Everything has changed a lot since that time (I mean the political situation in the world - a lot of negative emotions). So, thanks to your comment I looked through my blog again and received a lot of positive energy.

As for Norwegian team, I don't know what to say...I didn't notice anything. Of course, it's great that Russian team did well at the games, but if they hadn't take the first place, I wouldn't have been upset so much. For me it's the event itself that has meaning!

"Кабы не было зимы" - is one of my favourite songs.

  • Probably only winter olympic games, that I watched fully from opening ceremony till closing day. A lot of great feelings and emotions, Russia team are like beasts, well done!
But I still suspect, that something happened in Biathlon (4- men), where leader of Norwegian team missed 2 goals for nothing, and lost gold medals (before this day Norway was going first in total medal score:)
    Anyway, congratulations to Team Russia!

    "Если бы не было зимы"=)

  • Hello, M. Hakim!

I'm so glad you enjoyed reading my post and learnt something new about Russia and XXII Winter Olympic Games. It means I achieved my purpose to inform the world about real Russia and Russian people!

    Have a wonderful day!

  • Hello, dear Tara!

A huge ‘thank you’ to you for your great support! Of course, you understand me very well, as the previous Winter Olympics were held in Vancouver! Wow! It’s great you had a chance to go to a women's hockey game. Canadian women's hockey team was  fantastic here in Sochi! Did you see their final match with the USA?  It was so exciting! I think you’re so proud of them!

I also adore your figure skating ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moire! Here in Russia everybody loves them and think they’re number 1 in figure skating ice dancing! I remember very few ice dancers like them in the history of figure skating! They’re perfect!

Unfortunately, I wasn’t be able to visit Sochi, as it’s rather far away and I’m very busy at school, but some of my students did it together with their parents and they shared their fantastic impressions with us!

You’re absolutely right about my students. It was a nnique experience for them! And It’ll be continued tomorrow as we’ll meet the Paralympic Torch Relay here in Saratov. The Paralympics will be held 7 – 16 March. The slogan is ‘Spirit in motion!”. My students and I are going to follow this event, too, and present Paralympic news every day before the classers.

Thanks once more for the Olympic materials on EC. We also listened and discussed your voice recording about stray dogs in Sochi and Russian billionare Oleg Deripaska who founded a shelter for them.

    Very best wishes!

  • Hello Robbie!

Sorry for replying so late. I think you understand me pretty well.
Now the Olympic Games are over and all Russian people feel sad about it! The last three weeks were so exciting filled with positive news! Now I feel the lack of this magic experience!

Fortunately, on the 7th of March the XI Winter Paralympic Games will start in Sochi!!! And on Monday we'll meet the Paralympic torch relay here in Saratov!!! It won't be so huge and massive as the Olympic torch relay but we're also very excited about it! As our school is situated near the main city square, my students and I will go to meet it after the lessons!!!

So we hope the Paralympics will also have a success in spite of all these events in Ukraine ( all Russian peolpe have a lot of relatives and friends in this country. It's not surprising as we lived like one country for a long time). So now I'm not feeling so happy as before the Olympics.

However, I believe everything will be alright!

I like the slogan of the Paralympics "Spirit in motion!" and respect all the athletes of the Paralympics a lot!!! They're real heroes and can teach us how to cope with life's difficulties!

The mascots are The Ray of Light and a Snowgirl. The Fire Boy and the Snow Girl come from different planets. The Fire Boy comes from a planet where it's always hot, while the Snow girl came to earth on an icy comet. She looks like a snowflake, while he has hair that looks like fire.

Robbie, as for volunteering, we still have such an opportunity to do it during next Olympics. The XXIII Olympic Winter Games will take place in Pyeongchang, South Korea, between 9-25 February 2018. You know, there're a lot of foreign volunteers at every Olympics!

What do you think about it!

    Have a nice day!

    Galina

  • Thanks for sharing it. I have enjoy it.I have learnt something about Russia and  XXII Winter Olympic Games. All the best.

  • I'm so sorry that I didn't comment on this post yet. I wanted to read it in detail, and I had a busy few weeks! This is a fantastic post. I truly enjoyed every word of it, and all of the great pictures. It's so exciting when the Olympics comes to your own country. Having the Olympics in Vancouver a few years back was an unforgettable experience. I still can't believe I got to go to a women's hockey game. It must have been so fun to have the torch in your classroom! Your students will never forget it, and their projects will keep the memories alive.

Russia did a wonderful job hosting the Olympics. I'm sure you are very proud!

    Cheers and congrats,

    Tara

PS- I'm glad you enjoyed the Olympic materials on EC!
