HAND PULLER RICKSHAW

Most of us know about hand puller rickshaw. It is a mode of human powered transport by which a runner draws a two - wheeled cart which seats one or two people.

Around 1880, hand puller rickshaw appeared in India, first time in Shimla. And then later introduced in Kolkata (Calcutta, India).

Though, in recent times the use of human powered rickshaw has been discouraged or outlawed in many countries due to concern for the welfare of rickshaw workers and have been replaced by cycle and auto rickshaw. Still, today hand pull rickshaw do exist in some areas in Kolkata, poor need it to travel short distance even middle class use their service out of convenience and for short distance, local markets etc.

The pullers live a life of poverty and many sleeps under rickshaws. Its really pathetic to see them but unless and until they have other options of earning for their survival, they will continue to give service to public and for their survival.
