Hi, everyone! Although both my wife and I will be very busy till mid-January, I have decided to post one more grammar test, the last in 2017. This test is not easy. It expects you to know all English grammar in details. Besides, there may be wrong prepositions, articles, pronouns and much more. This test also contains some wrong phrasal verbs.

So, here is your task. You know you should correct all the mistakes.

  1. No sooner he was called off for coming to office after 8 am, when he managed being late for an hour again.
  2. Such pleasantly his voice sounded for everybody to listen to him in delight.
  3. If I was told I would become a director in business company, I would hardly have believed that.
  4. I would rather that my friend was marry with the other woman.
  5. I happened meeting her at the street and she said when she had dropped in my place yesterday, I seemed to go away or was sleeping.
  6. At days of Louis XIV French were famous because of their refined manner and subtle taste.
  7. When question being asked, none of students seemed knowing the answer.
  8. The discussing article was written by a scientist known like the author of the famous monograph within the field given.
  9. Being hold a hand of the boy, the thief neared to the deserted destroyed by time house.
  10. Being ripped away by a cabman who had thought I was a newcomer for that country, I explained him with his native language I had known how much I had to charge.

I believe we will be able to arrange or to take part in all the parties we have to throw or to be present at until you correct at least a half of the mistakes I have managed to make.

So, the deadline for this test is December 31.

Have a great weekend, my friends!

  • Here it is:

    9. Holding the boy's hand, the thief neared the deserted house, being destroyed by time.

  • Aaaa! I thought you meant the article that is mentioned in your sentence. LOL!

Let me think again about the ninth sentence :)

  • Dear Wolf, I am always happy to see you take part in such tests. You are not late for sure!

    1. I am glad to see you know this construction. However, OFFICE is a singular countable noun. Does it make any sense? " to be late for an hour" is understandable but incorrect. Let me tell you another example of this structure: "The bridge is 7 miles long."

    2. A voice sounds itself, it is the active voice. If there is SO in the main clause, we can't use the infinitive. It must be replaced by a clause.

    3, 4 are correct.

    5. First, we DROP INTO or IN AT some place. Then,

the past perfect tense is incorrect. There is a rule you should remember: if the direct speech is a complex sentence in the past tenses, they don't change in the reported speech. For example:

He said, "When you came to my place yesterday, I was sleeping." The reported speech will be:

He said when I came to his place yestreday/the day before he was sleeping.

Besides, both verbs "go away (I have a lot of doubts about AWAY as she might have thought I had gone to the store or...) and "sleep" must be in the forms of the infinitive. It is obvious that I had gone somewhere before she came or was sleeping when she knocked on my door.

    6. Correct.

    7. I am a teacher and the progressive tense doesn't sound right for me. When a teacher asks a question, students listen to him. A teacher may repeat the question and give his students some time to think the answer over. Only then they start answering.

    8. Let me ask why "within" the given field? It is understandable but you can find a better option.

    9. According to the grammar rules, it must be "the boy's hand". Besides, BY THE TIME means the house had been destroyed by the moment they neared it. But if I meant that, I would have written another sentence.

    10. Everything is correct except two tenses.

It is a good try and I hope you will correct the rest. Thank you!

  • Dear Elen,

    8. "The article being discussed was written by the scientist known as the author of a famous monograph in the given field." So, "the article being discuused" is correct. I have correct the articles but they have nothing to do with the tenses.

    9. If you use a participle before a noun (house), it must be only one word (V-ing or V-ed). A participle phrase must follow a noun. Besides, BY THE TIME means the house had been destroyed by the moment they neared it. But if I meant that, I would have written another sentence.

  • Dear Teacher Danny

Thanks a lot for the test. Seems my attempt is a bit late. Sorry for that.

Here are my answers, for your guidance please.

    1. No sooner had he been called down for coming to office after 8 am than he managed to be late for an hour again.
    2. So pleasant was his voice sounded for everybody to listen to him in delight.
    3. If I had been told I was going to be the director of a business company, I would _ have hardly believed that.
    4. I would rather that my friend were married to the other woman.
    5. I happened to meet her on the street and she said when she had dropped in my place yesterday, I seemed to have gone away or slept.
    6. In the days of Louis XIV, the French were famous for their refined manners and subtle tastes.
    7. When the question was being asked, none of the students seemed to know the answer.
    8. The article being discussed was written by a scientist known as the author of a famous monograph within the given field.
    9. Holding a hand of the boy, the thief neared to the deserted house destroyed by time.
    10. Having been ripped off by a cab man who had thought I was a newcomer in that country, I explained him in his native language that I had known how much I had to be charged.

  • Well... ok.

    8. The discussion article was written by a scientist known as the author of the famous monograph in the given field.

Or something else that I thought according to what we said but I am not sure:

    8. The article being discussed, was written by a scientist known as the author of the famous monograph in the given field.

I don't understand what you mean by saying you can also argue about the articles. Maybe you mean I should use simple present?

    ... is written... ?

    9. Holding the boy's hand, the thief neared the deserted and destroyed by the time house.

I am waiting for your corrections.

  • Dear Elen, I am happy you decided to complete the test. So,

    8. The beginning is wrong. At some moment some people were discussing an article. So the form of the participle is wrong. In your sentence (as well as in mine) the past perfect tense is senseless. I can also argue about the articles.

    9. 9. A thief who held a boy by the hand came up to the old building. Nobody had lived there for long and hadn't taken care of it. As a result, the house started going to ruins. You should correct my sentence using participles correctly.

Sure, I will help. Such tests are for you to learn.

  • And the next one:

    9. Having hold the hand of the boy, the thief neared the deserted house that was destroyed by the time.

  • Here is my next sentence:

    8. The discussed article had been written by a scientist known as the author of the famous monograph in the given field.

  • You are always welcome!
