Food Festival

Last Saturday (Sept. 4th, 2010), I went to the annual food festival called “Taste of Madison” at Wisconsin's capitol square. This year, 92 local restaurants participated and each one served about three different menus at $1 - $4 price range. On this day, I decided to forget about my health!Outside the capitol square, the police on the horse stay for security.

As far as I know, “Bandung” is the only Indonesian restaurant in the town. I had “Opor Ayum”. I don’t know what that means (anyone, help me!) but it was good with a nice flavor of lemongrass.

I usually stay away from large crowds, but the smell of food lured me this time.

At “Sa Bai Thong”, a Thai restaurant, I had “Pad Thai” stir-fried rice noodles. I like spicy food. Peanuts and cilantro added a nice texture and a flavor.

At “Café Costa Rica”, I had “Fried Plantains”. Plantains are a little different from regular banana we normally eat. I liked its natural sweetness.

At “Spice ‘n’ Curry”, an Indian Restaurant, I had “Pakora”, fried vegetables.

I wanted to have some seafood; I had “Hand Battered Halibut” at “Joey’s Seafood & Grill”, then “Grilled Shrimp Skewer” at “Red Lobster”.

At “Palis Mediterranean Grill”, I had “Gyro Sandwich”. Meat with some special sauce is wrapped in pita bread. Maybe it is not the authentic one, because there was no vegetable and the meat was some kind of patty. But it was good.

I wish I could try more ethnic dishes, but my two hours of stay made me full. So, I was satisfied and went home. If you are interested, visit http://tasteofmadison.comThe end ^_^

  • Hi Larisa, thank you for stopping by.  The food festival is held in September every year. You should come! Otherwise I will go again, eat as many dishes as I can, and share the pictures with you again :)
  • Thanks for sharing such a wonderful blog. Your story is very interesting and amazing, and the pictures are beautiful and ... so delicious. If I were you I couldn't resist a temptation to try them all.
  • Hi Rosenmaiden,
Thank you for the comments and nice pictures. "The Herring under the fur coat" looks good, tastes good, and is healthy. I would love it and maybe name it "rainbow herring" or something like that. I really want to try someday. How is herring cooked - marinaded?
  • Hello,Yoh!
Thank you very much for your interesting blog! I I have been waiting for it for a long time! :-)
The food festival - it's cool! We haven't got this kind of festivals! In our region only The Herrring's Day is hold!

The Herring's Day is held at the bank of the river Pregolya (Pregel). The main dish - "The Herring under the fur coat". There is not Eglish languare equivalent. It's alternation of different layers: herring, popato, carrot, onion, green peas & red beet + mayonnaise. It's tasty!

Yoh, would you like to have your own restaraunt? I think, you wold be a good owner! :-)))
    Have a great day!
  • Hello Syed,
Yes it was a huge party! Different bands played live on each side of the Capitol square. Thank you very much for stopping by and leaving a nice comment!
  • Hi Karenina,
Thank you for your nice comments and explaining Opor Ayam. Yes, the coconut gravy was very good with complex and subtle aromas. Some Indonesian dishes are well-known in Japan. I love “nasi goring” fried rice!
  • Thank you Lucy, my stomach is fine. I just gave it some rest; but you are right; I needed to drink a lot of water. I took a lot of salt from all the dishes, I think.

I promise I will take a lot of pictures of fall foliage and post them here. The goose family is doing fine - eating grass, swimming on the lake, .. always together ^_^

This festival was for Saturday and Sunday. My stomach needs some rest today^_^
Now the temperature here is below 20C and goes down to below 10C at night. People wear long sleeves now. Leaves started turning yellow/brown. Fall is just around the corner.
  • Fizzy, thank you, that's a good suggestion. I will jog with my K-On friends! lol
