  • Hi,  dear SNR! You corrected some mistakes but ypu made others! Please, try to correct only the mistakey I mention. So,

    1. The last verb must be in the past perfect tense as this action had been before he came to school. The rest is correct.

    2. In your first atttempt you wrote "had solved" and I said it is correct. There is still one more mistake "the other". If we say so, it means there were only two students at class and I am sure there were more.

    3. Here is your previous sentence "He said that he would sell the old car before buying a new one." The verb "sell" is in the wrong tense. The rest is correct.

    4. It is OK, but there mist be eitheran article or a possessive pronoun before "medicine".

    5. It is the direct reported question. So, your word order is wrong. Besides, we speak about geography and "were" is also wrong.

    7. Here is your previous sentence "She is nice to look at and to talk as well." It is almost correct, but we need a p[reposition after "talk". You shouldn't change anything else.

    8. There shouldn't be THE before TV. The tense in the reported speech is wrong. It was the day before.

    9. There are two mistakes. First, we don't use STILL in the negative sentences. Besides, I sent a parcel some time ago. The present perfect is a wrong tense.

    10. We don't use the future tenses in the conditional clauses.

About the idiom. "I was my hands" means that I absolve myself of responsibility or future blame as I did everything I could.

Please, try to make your sentences correct.

  • Dear SNR, let me analyze your answers.

    1. It is a teacher who gives assignments. So, the last verb must be in the passive voice. Besides, this action had been BEFORE.

    2. THE OTHER STUDENT means there were only two students at class and it is unlikely.

    3. You can omit THAT as we usually do in the reported speech but it is not a mistake. But look at the tenses. He decided to sell his old car BEFORE.

    4. It is a comparison. The first clause is a time clause where we don't use the future tenses. The second clause is the main, there must be the future tense.

    5. It is a reported direct question. You corrected 9. The structure of this sentence is the same. Besides, there is a wrong construction (it were), wrong tense and no article.

    6. Correct.

    7. Almost correct, but there must be the preposition after TALK.

    8. Wrong tenses, wrong voice in the last clause.

    9. Wrong tense in the reported speech.

    10. ANYONE DOESN"T is wrong. You should use the negative pronoun.

I explained your mistakes. The rest is correct. The idea of such tests is to correct the mistakes yourselves so that you will remember them. Will you try again, please?

  • Don't mention, dear!

  • Hi, dear Lady E. We DO something in/at school but we GO to school.

  • Dear Onee, if we mean the day before TODAY it was YESTERDAY. It doesn't matter if is theh direct or indirect speech. If we mean some day in the past, we say THE DAY BEFORE. Your reported speech is correct. But the direct speech must be:

He asked: "Did you hear the news on TV yesterday?" Now, if I mean that he asked this question TODAY, I will say:

He asked if I had heard the news on TV yesterday.

  • Teacher Tanya and Danny,

Thank you so much for the answer and explanation. ^_^

I have one question, still for number 9.

You said we can say yesterday besides the day before. Is it because we are talking about it today? What if we said this last week or times ago.

    Sunday, last week:

He said, "Have you heard the news on TV yesterday?"

    Sunday, now:

On Sunday last week, he asked if I had heard the news on TV the previous day.

'Yesterday' wouldn't make sense to me in this indirect speech above. I really learnt a lot from your all tests. Thank you once again for your explanation. ^^

  • My friends, Danny asked me to post the answers and the explanations and here you are!

    1. When he came to school, he recalled he hadn’t learned what he had been assigned (4).
    2. When he had solved/was solving  the problem incorrectly, another student tried__ correcting/to correct him (4).
    3. He said he would have sold the old car before he bought a new one (2).
    4. The earlier you __ take the/your medicine, the better you will feel (3).
    5. He asked if there are many big cities in the USA (3).
    6. 6.      __ Don’t forget to switch off the light when you __ leave /are leaving/going to leave(5).
    7. 7.      She is nice both to look at and to talk to ___ (3).
    8. I __ sent her a parcel but it hasn’t been delivered, yet (4).
    9. He asked if I had heard the news on __ TV yesterday/the day before (4).
    10. If no one does this test correctly, I will wash my hands (4)

    Here are my explanations.

1.First, a student was assigned to learn something, then he didn’t learn it and only then he came to school and recalled that fact. Both actions (had been assigned and hadn’t learned) had been before he came to school.  It is teachers, who give students assignments. So, the last verb must be in the passive voice.

    2. First, a student solved the problem incorrectly. Then, some other (another) student tried to correct him. So, the first verb must be in the past perfect tense. THE OTHER is wrong in this sentence as there are more than two students in a group.

    3. A man decided to sell his old car BEFORE buying a new one. First of all, it is the future past (or, maybe the future if he hasn’t sold it yet) actions. The last clause is the time clause. There must be the past (preset) simple tense. As he decided to sell BEFORE buying, the verb SELL must be in the future past (future) perfect tense.

    4. It is a well-known comparison. Now, look here. If I say it without using a comparison construction, it will be:

You will feel better after you take the medicine.

The last part is a time clause, there must be the present tense.

    5. It is a general reported question. It must star with IF/WHETHER and have a direct word order. Sure, we must say THERE ARE many cities…. The correct tense is present simple as America with all its cities still exists. We use the article THE before the names of the countries consisting of more than one word. The only one exception is Great Britain.

    6. This sentence is in the imperative mood. As a rule, we don’t use a subject in such sentences. We switch the light ON/OFF. The last clause is a time clause, there must be the present tense.

    7. We can’t use BOTH and AS WELL in the same sentence. There must be only one of them.

    8. I sent a parcel some time ago (the simple past tense), but it hasn’t been delivered till now. It is mailmen who deliver mail. So, the last verb must be in the passive voice. We don’t use STILL in the negative sentences. It must be YET at the end.

    9. It is the same reported question as 5. He asked me about some news (an uncountable noun) that I could hear yesterday (if he asked me today) or the day before (if all those events took place in the past). In any case, it is the past perfect tense. We don’t use any articles before TV and TELEVISION.

!0. It is the real condition in the future I have already explained a few times. There must be the present tense in the conditional clause and the future tense in the main. And let me tell you again that we don’t use ANYBODY/ANYTHING as a subject in the negative sentences.

My friends, if you still have some questions, I will gladly answer them.

  • Dear Onee, your sentence is correct. WAS SOLVING is possible in this sentence.

  • Dear Peppo, 4,5,6,7,8 are correct. 3 is almost correct, but WOULD is a modal auxiliary and must be followed by the infinitive. So, it must be WOULD HAVE SOLD. ( is also almost correct, but we don't use the article before TV and TELEVISION. Ther rest are wrong. I will post the answers some later, so, you still have some time for correcting.

  • Now,  I have another answer for number 2. :D

When he was solving the problem incorrectly, another student tried to correct him.
