Egypt without Internet!

"When I despair, I remember that throughout history, truth and love have always won" - Gandhi

After the turmoil in Tunisia where popular revolt had over-thrown the current government, it seems the protests seem to have inspired people in Egypt. This Egyptian people have used Twitter, Facebook and other mediums on the internet to protest against their current government headed by Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt's crisis

  • Most populous Arab nation, with 84.5 million inhabitants
  • Authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak has ruled for 30 years
  • Protests against corruption, lack of democracy, inflation, unemployment
  • Triggered by overthrow of President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia

There has been a sporadic control of the internet in Egypt but the protests seemed to not have quieted down. Yesterday, the Egyptian government has not only blocked Facebook, Twitter and other popular websites to communicate but also completed shut-down the internet.

This is quite unprecedented in a country the size of Egypt. There are some countries where internet is heavily monitored or censored but I have never heard of a country which shut down its internet completely.

Do you think that it is okay for countries to have a complete shutdown of internet even if there is trouble in the country? Do drop in your comments.

  • Thank you Siria for the corrective informations,I don't know which media(as telephone, internet,SMS,radio etc.....) are working there for sure.

Yesterday the tourists, who came home from Egypt, reported that they couldn't contact their families for two days before their arrival home, but I don't know if that meant, that they could not phone to them.?

I apologize, but I have to tell you, that I have no reliable informations about the present situation, whether there is telephone connection or not,....so rather say nothing!

Yes,you are right,it would be a really problematic situation.....

  • Thank you Siria for your interest, hoping the best,...without  violence hopefully....

  • My dear Monika! Thanks for your exact attention to the world problems.

People want be blockedin the most important things like communication.

How long will it be going? The world is tired of the constant war's problems

and  people would like to see their government use all resources for more

useful things, including pollution , energy demands, health, unemployment.....

Thank you for sharing your ideas, your blogs are very unique.

  • Thanks Naima,Nafis and Lynne again!Hope Naima, that your country will prosper!

    The best!

  • I am hoping for that too Monika.
  • Dear Monika, such incident is not new at all. Many authoritarian countries have enforced the censorship already. They think blocking the Internet will solve the problem but in the opposite, it makes people stronger and more motivated. I wish peace for the world!
