Some people may think English grammar is important. To make a grammatically correct sentence, you need to learn grammar such as verb tenses, prepositions, countable/uncountalbe nouns, collocations and so on - it definitely takes a lot of time and effort to learn all of them. And, if you want to pass an English test such as TOEFL, IELTS, you also need to learn grammar. Thus, people here (where I live) usually spend a lot of time learning grammar and they may start to learn it from the very beginning of their learning of English.

Some other people, however, insist that taking so much time to learn grammar is useless or just a waste of time. They reason that a child who lives in an English-speaking country can speak fluently and understand what others are saying very well, but they may not know much grammar.

I'm reading another English grammar book enthusiastically.

Do you find grammar important?

  • Hi Andria,

Thanks for the informative comment. So, that makes two of us. I think grammar is very important too, even though it's also true that native English speakers can speak very good English without being aware of the correct grammar usage. Yes, children in an English-speaking country can speak English very well without learning any grammar. But I doubt if it will work for non-native learners.

    Thanks again,

    Expector

  • @roshdy: Thanks for the comment.

@DarkSpot: It's hard to say which is most important. I guess you need to learn all of them.

  • it is important to improve our english in conversation
  • Hi anele,

You can say that again. It seems to me that learning some grammar might be the answer, if your mother tongue isn't English. Glad you found it important and thanks for your comment!
  • Hi Syed,

Thanks for your comment. Yes, to immerse yourself in an English-speaking country can be an ideal way to improve your English.
But you could try my method to improve your spoken English: Write a Dialogue to Improve Your Speaking

    Hope that helps!
  • Hi carol,

Glad to know you find grammar important. Yes, grammar might be part of the answers to how to improve your English. You need more practice,of course.

English language can be tricky. It takes time and effort to learn or improve it - I don't think there's a so-called easy way to master it. But learning English can be fun. You may even find some fun ways to learn it.

You should read something interesting, not so hard, and you can watch English movies with subtitles to practise your listening and speaking skills. You can write blogs here, and, hopefully, somebody else may correct your writing, which is of great help for learners.

Good luck in your studing English!

  • Hi Expector,
Recently, we use more and more English in my work, including reading, writing, listening and speaking. I think grammar is important, but it's not the only important during the course of learning and using English. For me , I have found the grammar is important In reading and writing.Without good grammar, sometimes,it seems that i can't get the correct meaning of writer or email sender, that will influnce my understanding and communication. But if lack of exercise or practice ,with good grammar we still can't use it in our life. I think the grammar provide us the entrance to enter the english world, but if want to swim freely, need our more experience and practice.
Now i am finding the most proper way for me to improve my English. Especially learning and speaking, Expector, Could you give me some advice?
    Thanks.
    Carol
  • Hi juan,

Thanks for the comment. Good writing!
Yes, we can't emphasize the importance of English too much. English seems to be a global language now. English could mean opportunities, jobs, success, or even a great future. It's worth all the efforts to learn it. No doubt some English tests, such as TOEFL, IELTS, are so popular in some areas in the world, especially in Asia.

I know Filipinos like you are good at English. I wonder if English is your official language?

    See you,

  • I think learning the English language is not a waste of time.
Here in our country there are many english speakers like teachers, doctors, nurses, call center agents, etc.
Now why do we want to learn the English language?
As I have written on my blog "Is the English language a tsunami that washes out other languages?" it is because of opportunity.
First of all the medium of instructions in schools in our country is in English.
Subjects like Mathematics, English, Science and Technology are all taught in English.
Second because of opportunity. Many people here in our country who cannot find jobs here go abroad. Filipinos who want to work abroad like nurses, welders, domestic helpers must know how to speak English, because most of the countries that hire filipino workers are English speaking countries.
another reason is because there are many contact centers here in the philippines. It is also called the sunshine industry of our country because of millions of dollars of taxes that the government earns from it. There are 400,000 Filipinos who are good or should I say fluent in English that works in call centers here. And they earn well they earn from 20,000 pesos to 40,000.
last but not the least it is because the world is getting smaller. Information spread fast because of internet. Travelling is much easier now because of airplanes, cars, Ships etc. since the world is getting smaller and we people from all over the world meet we need a language that will make communicating with one another much easier and English is the answer.
so for me learning English language is not a waste of time
  • Hi mayumi,
I'm not really a teacher or an editor or a writer, although sometimes I do teach and write English. I'm just a 'fan of English'. Now that English language is thought to be a global lauguage, it makes sense to take time and pain to learn and master it, doesn't it?

BTW (by the way) or incidentally, what aspects of English grammar you think are hard to learn? How about 'verb tenses', 'prepositions', 'the articles' (a/an,the), 'modal verbs', and the like?
