Some people may think English grammar is important. To make a grammatically correct sentence, you need to learn grammar such as verb tenses, prepositions, countable/uncountalbe nouns, collocations and so on - it definitely takes a lot of time and effort to learn all of them. And, if you want to pass an English test such as TOEFL, IELTS, you also need to learn grammar. Thus, people here (where I live) usually spend a lot of time learning grammar and they may start to learn it from the very beginning of their learning of English.

Some other people, however, insist that taking so much time to learn grammar is useless or just a waste of time. They reason that a child who lives in an English-speaking country can speak fluently and understand what others are saying very well, but they may not know much grammar.

I'm reading another English grammar book enthusiastically.

Do you find grammar important?

  • Hi Erica,

Thank you for the nice comment. I'm so pleased you find it necessary to learn grammar. In fact, sometimes, you have to learn English grammar, particularly when you need to take English tests.

    Thanks again,

    Expector

  • As a student myself raised in the United States, I still practicing my grammar and my writing skills. I highly recommended to every student; while learning English to practice grammar.

Yes, English Grammar is essential in every aspect-to speak, to write and to have a meaningful conversation. Let me start by saying that children and adult born and raised in the United States are attending REMEDIAL English Classes in College in order to be promoted to English Literature....  They weren't aware of the importance of GRAMMAR. It takes time to learn and to master any language. I am a student too, however, i loved  learning my grammar.

  • Hi Kayla,

Thank you for the comment. Yes, you can say that again. In fact, I can't imagine learning English without learning grammar. But, for native speakers, they may not be aware that they're making sentences according to grammar.

    Thanks again!

  • Hi Expector Smith-

I would say that grammar is important, but not just because fluency tests require it, but in order to approach the English language with a sincere desire to know and understand it. When I say grammar, however, there are some things that English learners do not necessarily have to learn right away in the learning process. In other words, technical grammar words like collocations and gerunds might only confuse or frustrate a new learner. So, in the process of teaching a new English learner, I would take it slow and only begin with the basics of grammar. Thank you for your blog!

  • Thanks for the comment, Chardra! Non-English speakers really need to learn some English grammar if they do want to improve their English.

  • Hi, Expector Smith! I agree with you and most of the commentators here that grammar is important. We can't make correct sentences and express our idea properly, understand text, make people understand what we mean precisely without knowing how to do it. Besides, at schools, at some tests and when we are looking for a job it is also tested. Of course it is not the only way to improve our English but we can't ignore it. Thanks for showing me this interesting blog.

  • Hi Expector,

I agree with you. Although saying of unnecessary grammar learning, it is important that it should be a reference for those who : "ESL in their country".

However I want to suggest to listen this podcast; (As to me; I approach this issue multifaceted, I try to use every way including grammar.)
