As if killing a mosquito with a gun

This news was broadcasted about two years ago. An officer of the U.S army said in his talk that an ally of the U.S destroyed a small drone with a Patriot Air Defence missile. The price of a small drone was about 200 dollars. On the other hand, the price of a Patriot Air Defence missile was about three and a half million dollars. It cost seventeen thousand times as much as a small drone. It was a huge waste of money, wasn't it? It was as if killing a mosquito with a gun.

  • Oi there again,

Tam, with the present day technology an F-18 can be operated as a drone and it cannot be brought down with conventional machine gun nor even by anti-aircraft artilery, so using a more sophisticated [and very expensive] weaponry is the most effective option.

    • Hi, Rysperski. I mean a small drone is like this picture. It would be easy to shoot down with weapons as I said, wouldn't it?

  • Hi, Rysperski. Thank you for your comment. In fact, well armed drones are a threat to the national security. but there are some other good ways to shooting down them such as a machine gun and antiaircraft artillery.

The officer of the U.S army said that if he is the army of them, he buys many drones and sends to them so that their patliot missiles run out.

  • Hi, Mishaikh. Thank you for your comment. I don't know about the recent situation in Afghanistan, but I knew that even if they have a big difference in their military power, it is not easy to defeat the enemy, when we think about past wars such as Vietnam War and Iraq War.

  • Oi there

As far as I know, two years ago drones are not only small flying toys - they can be big, well armed pilotless aicrafts that can spy and give away vital information as well as destroy ground equipment. So shooting down a drone can be a defence action worth the cost.

Now about negotiations. Negotiate with whom? With what result? Many paramilitary and military groups yell for negotiations when they find themselves against a wall and need time to reorganise themselves  - it's just time given for them to continue their destructive actions.

  • Yes, it is rather senseless.  Aren't you seeing the recent situation with the super power in Afghanistan.  After waisting a huge amount of lives and money the super power has at last realized and come on the table of negotiation.
