Did you ever make a vegetable garden?

I love to garden and I really, really, really love to eat the fresh vegetables. Gardens are not difficult if you have healthy soil.

Some plants like soil that is a little bit acidic and others like a neutral or a more alkaline soil.

Weeds also like gardens and seem to like every kind of soil. Weeds are what we call any plant that we don't want growing in the garden.

If you want to make a garden, you need to decide what you will grow. It is good to check your soil and make sure that it is good for the crop you will grow. The potato does best with soil that is slightly acid and not very high in nitrogen content. Wood ash or manure would not be good to add to your soil if you will grow a potato crop. Potato flowers are different colors from different kinds of potatoes.

I always add some organic materials to my soil. I like to save the leaves, roots and stems of plants I don’t eat. Coffee grounds, old cabbage and other vegetable waste can be composted to make a very good organic material to add to your garden.

Thanks Nina for your comment. And Jimmy, the white flowers make a potato with white skin. The others are a small brown skinned potato. There are hundreds of different varieties and several are available here in Japan. I will mostly give the potatoes to friends who will enjoy them. I never tried potatoes before, but we had some when I was a child. My father liked collecting them Very young when they are called New Potatoes. It is my first attempt and I had to read exactly how to plant them.

Thanks Riya, Sami and Daniel. I enjoy spending time outside and of course watching the plants grow big and ready to eat.

Gardening requires a lot of patience but it can be very rewarding.

My dad also has a green thumb. He is most passionate about orchids which are very hard to maintain. I here attached a photo of white orchids in my dad's garden, my favourite. :)

Thanks Nishan and Rajesh. Organic gardening is best but it is a lot of work removing the insects that kill the plants. Actually it would be easier to grow things that the bugs don't like. The parsley, cilantro, dill, and strawberries haven't been touched at all by the insects. Maybe that is just luck so far.

Rudra, I am growing lettuce, potato, tomato, strawberry, bok choy, cabbage, red radish, celery, onion, parsley, sage, cilantro (coriander), dill, bell pepper and eggplant. I may have planted too many rows of potatoes instead of adding more variety. Still I shouldn't get bored with fifteen different items.
This is a mountainside field and rich soil. Other crops my neighbors grow are asparagus, buckwheat, blueberry, pears, apples, ume (sour plum), and where there is better water they grow rice.
