Separating work and personal life

When your business is an online service, such as teaching, how do you separate personal life from work life?

As an online teacher, teaching students from countries all around the world in different time zones, how can you teach students unless you make yourself available at all times of the day and night, including the weekends?

What do you do about students who subsequently become from your friends, or at least, friendly? Do you still segregate them or add them to your…

About Halina’s approach to teaching/learning languages

In my opinion, introducing new techniques and approaches to language learning seem to be relevant these days.  This is why we, language teachers have to understand the implication of learners’ development to the need for lifelong language education. Therefore, communication skills should be worked on continuously.

Firstly, teachers should introduce the new possibilities and reflect on engaging students in lifelong language learning. Secondly, teachers should look into the…

How long does it take to speak a language?

I believe that learning a foreign language is an established training. I've spent my whole life working on mastering languages.

We have to practice every day and should communicate with natives as often as possible.

If we do not have the time or a chance, we will lose our conversational skills.

They say practice makes perfect; whatever I think about this slogan, it seems to be true.

At the same time, I am aware of the fact that I will never speak like a native.

TOEFL iBT-- Reading Strategies

Hello ESL learners!

I've been certified in not only teaching ESL, but also in preparing for the TOEFL iBT.

If you are taking this lengthy test, the idea is that you already know English. That is to say: when preparing for the iBT, you should expect to be trained on the exam's layout and its' strategies. Conversely, you should NOT expect to be taught English.

There is, however, time for grammar review and things like that, but you need to already know English.

ESP is not usually for Beginners

This blog post discusses ESP as a type of English class. The blog is not at a beginner level and will be too difficult for beginners unless you take your time using your dictionary and the vocabulary words at the end. I do hope that upper intermediate readers will be able to understand this topic easily.

ESP stands for English for Specific Purposes.  It is sometimes called English for Special Purposes which means the same.

How much can you do and stay sane? ( Why I Haven't Been Here Lately )

What is the busiest schedule you have ever had in school? To be more clear, I am asking how many classes you have ever taken or taught on a weekly basis?

I love teaching English, but I have been teaching 43 classes a week! That is 23 classes in the mornings and 20 classes at night, each week.

I admit that I haven't been able to prepare for classes the way I would like to.  I also admit that I have been very poor at keeping in touch with my English Club friends since I arrived…
